This idea might have been kicked around before, or just plain kicked out. It could be a big hit or just a dumb thought. I was thinking of what would make a nice prize for BLADE FORUMITES. I thought maybe I could cut out and shape a nice

coffin handled bowie blank, and send it to who ever volunteered to grind it. Then they could send it to someone else to say,, carve it. Then to the next person for the guard and so on till we have a multi-maker knife. Each maker adds his or her own little touch. It could be raffled off to raise some money for the forums or just given in a contest like the current ones going on. Lemme know whatcha think, good or bad. I can cut the blank out asap and get it in the mail. Take care! Michael

what kind of handles do you want on it, i have bloodwood, kingwood, cocobolo, and soon to have honduras rosewood, and lacewood. i can finish with paste wax, shellac, and lacquer. where is this knife gonna end up?

I'd love to do the crossguard. I have a lovely piece of brass that begs for filework.
I'm all for it. It could be auctioned for a good cause, given as a prize, raise money for the forums. Sounds like a great idea.

i work in horn to, except stag, george is the king of stag, if you want buffalo horn, i don't have any in stock, but if anyone wants to supply it. and if supplied i'll work in mother of pearl and ivory. at $10 a week i can't afford that stuff.

Hey, count me in, maybe some filework down the spine and a solid wood scabbard?? something real nice, people should include what they think they are best at when it comes to knifemaking so we can get the best from every maker involved.

I think my specialities are design and probably my nice touches of filework and general feel and balance of my blades...

Alan Folts..

contact me and we can figure out how to do this....

OUTSTANDING FOLKS!!!!!!! I'll get it cut and shaped asap.I'll use 440c unless someone thinks ats-34 might be better. Who wants to grind the profile?? Hollow or flat ground, either works for me.
Who ever wants to grind it, email me your address and I'll get it to you. Then you can send it to ALAN FOLTS for the file work and he can pass it on to OZ for the brass work, and then to MAGNUM44 for the handle. Magnum44, what ever handle material you want to use is fine with me.Each maker adds his own personal touch, thats what will make this a special knife. Oops, I left out the heat treating. We'll need someone to take care of that too. I can make a sheath or a nice mahagony display case for it, and then send it to the appropriate person at BLADE FORUMS. Wow, I never expected this kind of response!! Almost talked myself out of making the posting. Thanks fellow FORUMITES!! Take care! Michael

I will do the grind and filework if you guys want...

I think a flat grind looks much nicer on a bowie than a hollow grind sorta keeps it in that genre' doesnt modernize it too much...

Alan...

i agree flat grinds do look better. rob simonich is an excellent heat treater, i don't know if he wants to, but you should talk to him about it. this is going to be an art knife correct? i can't wait to put the handles on it. is it a full tang knife, i perfer to work with them.

L6STEEL,

I like the idea. If you need someone to flat grind the blade, I'll do it. I've been flat grinding blades for 12 years now, so I should
have a little bit of experience by now.

Let me know.

wow, very impressive knife. what order are we going to make this in. ie blade, guard, handle, with a little more detail.

yek just offered to donate some mammoth ivory to me for the handles. thanks yek. he says it'll stand out better with ivory over wood. can we get this knife in a knife magazine?

What do you guys think about a tapered tang?? Anyone do that? Take care! Michael

Hey Barry!!

we finally get together to do a project I never figured it would be like this...
smile.gif

I figure it should be in the order of
Profile
Grind
Filework
Finish
Heat Treat
Refinish
Guard and fixtures
Handles
Final finish
Sheath

So if we are gonna do this thing up real nice with ivory and the whole bit, maybe we should find someone to donate some nice engraving or maybe a killer leather sheath for it, If we are gonna go through this much trouble lets make it right..

Alan...

WOW, DENMARK!!!!!!!! KNIFE MAGAZINE!!! THIS IS GONNA BE BIGGER THAN I EVER THOUGHT!!
