PASS AROUND KNIFE??

This is a really neat idea. It looks like most of the "choice" stuff is accounted for, but maybe if it's going to be slab-/taper-tang I could offer to do some fileworked spacers to go under the scales? You know, where you put like a 0.040" piece of brass or NS under each scale and run a pattern around its edges?

l-6 could you mail scetches of the knife to members involved, and write down the names of people willing to do a certain part of the work. and i have a few more questions, and requests. corduroy when you do the file work could you make it slightly deeper than usual, becuase when i grind the side of the handles even, i may take of a little. l-6 are you drilling holes in the tang? if so drill them 11/64" becuase i use rivets, no pins, unless you guys want me too. what type of steel are we going to make it from? what sould we write in the engraving?

Sure Magnum! Everyone thats contributing to this knife, email me your address and i'll send you a sketch of the knife and a list of whos doing what. As far as the steel, I was figuring 440c 3/16" thick. Is that ok with everyone?

Alan, thanks for the outline!! This is what we have so far, and what we need to figure out.If anyone wants to change the lineup, let just holler.
Profile: L6steel(Michael A. Cooper)
Grind: Barry Jones
Filework: Alan Folts
Finish:
Heat Treat:Rob Simonich
Refinish:
Guard and Fixtures: Osbourn
Handle Spacers: Corduroy (Drew Gleason)
Handles: Mammoth Ivory put on the blade by Magnum 44.
Final Finish:
Sheath: Ansoknive (Jens Anso)
If we decide to go with a tapered tang, we'll need someone to do that. Magnum, I was thinking about what you said about sending out a sketch of the knife. Wouldn't we lose some of the mixture of talent and art each person will add by starting with a specific sketch or idea? Take care!! Michael

Magnum,

I may be over-complicating things with my suggestion, but here's how I handle fileworked spacers.

The (unfiled) spacers and handle material are attached with screw-type rivets but the rivet heads are not ground off. Basically the handle scales, spacers, and tang are ground all flush, shaped, and mostly finished up but not permanantly attached. Then you open the handle back up, filework the spacers and buff their edges, and then re-assemble the handle permanently. Epoxy is used sparingly so it doesn't flow into the filework. Finally, the rivet heads are ground off and the handle given its final polish.

If this is too much trouble, I could sit this one out or find another way to be helpful.

l-6 i wanted you to send out scetches so that everyone knows the basic design and can at least start their part in it all, like cutting out handles, ordering parts ect. it also gives you an idea of what it's gonna look like too. hope this isn't to much trouble, just make a scetch and photo copy it, and keep the original. corduroy, i don't know how to file work, but never used bolt type rivets, i use push tight ones. how about epoxying them to the knife, then when i get them i wont have to work on em'. that will also give them a seal to the knife so no bacterial colonizes in your knife handle. i won't take to much of of them i'm gonna use a 220grt disk to sand them flush. good idea?

I figure we can do it that way, OK. I'll try to do the work deep and you'll try not to take off too much, and in the end we'll be swell

Are folks getting fired up?

Hey Guys,

Since you have me down as grinding The blade,
why don't I just go ahead and do the regrind
and put a nice hand-rubbed finish on her. If we are going to put mammoth ivory scales on it, then the hand-rubbed finish is what you
want.

BARRY

guys this is such an awesome idea!! It is like a chain letter! Anyways i would love to help but i am just a starter at this and wouldn't want to screw it up. If there is anything i can do let me know.

Pray for us Luke!!! Are you talking about cutler's rivets, Magnum? On a knife this slick, I think something fancier would be better, like say, some mosaic pins or some 1/4" brass pins that could be engraved if we can get an engraver to donate their services. I have some mosaic made up and would gladly throw them in. Barry, how fine do you want the blade blank finished? I usually work them through 320 grit before I grind them. Is that ok, or do you want it finer? I will have it in the mail for sure on Tuesday, so let me know this weekend.

everyone is getting fired up. corduroy i'll make sure not to take to much of. L6 i was talking about cutler's rivets. i'm sure you could engrave them, but if you think mosiac pins would look better id be glad to put them in. and so i can order the ivory(without waiting for the plans), what is largest width and length of the handles? thanks annd i'll get them in 3/8".

We can go two ways with the handles. Just put a guard on it with full size handles, or use a guard and bolsters which would allow for more surface for engraving and also smalled handle slabs. If we use bolsters too, the handles would need to be 3 1/8" by 1 1/8". Without bolsters, they would be 5 by 1 3/8". What do you folks think would be best?

It seems you are getting somewhere with this project.
Magnum - if you send the knife to Jens here in Denmark, i'm sure it will be shown in the danish knife-magazine. His sheaths look really great.

I had five books send to me from the U.S. recently, and the shipping costs were a little less than 7$ so I guess a knife - depending on size - would be about 3-4$ if you use surface mail, at least twice as much if you send it by airmail. If Jens has a hunting-license - I think he does - or a permit to collect knifes and swords, there will be no problem. If he hasn't, I do and you guys are welcome to ship it to me and I'll send it to Jens, but I dont think there will be any problems.
One more thing - it takes 3-4 weeks to get here by surfacemail, and the same the other way, so if you people are in a hurry, mayby you should find somebody who will pay for the airmail. I'll pay half of the return-ticket if Jens takes the other half.

I would be more than happy to finish the blade and send it to Jens. I wouldn't send it any other way but asap air.

IMHO the only thing left out was scrimshaw. Maybe a lady would want to participate? I can't wait to bid on or maybe buy raffle tickets?
