PASS AROUND KNIFE??

L6,

I've been gone all weekend. Sorry. 320 grit
will be fine.

Looks like this project is making a big splash.

No problem Barry!! Barry, what do you think about dovetailing the handles and the bolsters? I virtualy never make a presentation grade knife without them. Its kinda like a tapered tang or decorative carving, just another touch that shows the maker's skill level and attention to detail. We all need to decide this before it goes to Oz for the hardware. Heres the blade. It has a 10 1/2" blade and is 16" overall. I'll get it in the mail Tuesday. Take care! Michael

PARDON ME IF BOTH REPLIES GOT POSTED. FOR SOME REASON, THEY DIDN'T SHOW UP WHEN I SUBMITTED THEM.

micheal,
if you want dovetails, just tell the making of the bolsters, and i'll dovetail the handles to fit. i think it would be need if we dovetailed a spacer on both sides.

micheal,
if you want dovetails, make sure you tell the one whose making the bolsters, i'll put them on the handles, no problem. it might be cool to dovetail a spacer in between the handles and bolsters, say, mother of pearl. i don't have it on hand, but i can get it easy.

micheal,
i have an idea with the dovetails, how about we put a spacer in between, with dovetails, on both sides, say mother of pearl, or buffalo horn. it may be over doing it, but if you guys want it, i'll order the stuff when i get the chance.

I was going to offer to do the sheath, too, but it looks like Jens beat me to it. I'm not sure you'd want a Kydex sheath for this knife, anyway!

The other logical choice would've been Gary Graley, but if Jens' leather sheaths are as nice as the Kydex ones he shows on his webpage then it should turn out looking pretty cool!

Dovetailing bolsters may be beyond my skill level at this point, so we may want to see if we can find someone else to contribute bolsters. Doesn't seem too hard, but I haven't done it before. If we can find someone experienced with it, right after I do the crossguard, it would also allow one other person to get in on this great project. Maybe an engraver? Seems like a great place for engraving...

I agree OZ, I think thats why this style of knife usually has a quillon and bolsters, more room for engraving. It is super easy to dovetail bolsters and handles. All you do is put the platen on your belt grinder and tilt it to around 45 degrees in relation to your tool support. Then grind the bolsters down till the egde is even. If noone else wants to do it, I can just dovetail some brass and send it along with the blank. I always attach the front bolster, then the handles, then the rear bolsters. That way you're assured of a tight even fit without resanding the hanldes and the threat of taking too much off. I'm putting too much of my ideas in this knife, and thats opposite of the whole point in making it a pass around knife. Heres what we need to do. Each person do what ever he feels, even if its changing the shape of the blade. He sends it on to the next person and they do the same thing. No preplanning or anything. That way each maker will truely be adding their own touch to the knife. So forget the dovetails unless the guard and bolster maker decides to go that route, and lets try not discussing what each will do. I think it would be more spontaneous that way. Whew!!!!! Take care! Michael

L6,

I "LOVE" the shape of this bowie. I took one look at her and she screamed for me to add
a false edge (swedge) to the top. I can put one on and leave enough room for filework.
Let me know what you think.

BARRY

YES BARRY, THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT EVERYONE WHO WORKS ON THIS KNIFE TO DO AND FEEL. TO REACT, NOT ACT!!!!!!!! HOT DAMN!!!!!!!!!

sorry micheal i thought you meant a dovetail as in a wood dovetail(the connection) sory about that. that would look pretty neat. i have a question about cutting ivory, i'm gonna need to make a few small cutts, can i cut it on a wood bandsaw?

everyone,
rob simonich returned my e-mail, and said he would be glad the heat treat the bowie. so, alan when your done with the blade make sure to send it over to him. i'd say rc56 would be good. you guys will surely be impressed with the heat treat. if you need anymore info on where to send it check out robs web site www.simonichknives.com

This project is so cool! I wish that I was a knifemaker so that I could participate.

Go Guys! Go!!
I wish I could add more to this project other than encouragement.
could I offer a suggestion?
Maybe each person working on the knife could have a pic taken with it when he's done with his section? I'd really like to see who is working on it and what they have added to it!

Spyderco Starmate winner! Thanks Sal Glesser!!!

Maybe somebody could donate some exotic leather like frog, stingray, reptile or the like. If so I would make a nice inlay in the sheath.
Do we have a timeschedule?
I will take photos of the knife on send it to the Danish knifemagazine. If they turn out nice I´ll send them to Blade aswell. I think I´ll post the pictures on my homepage aswell.
Have you thought more about who is going to get it. If we donated it to bladeforums it would be on the frontpage for a month.

If we can find some leather in Denmark at a fair price, I'll see what I can work out with Jens - it sure would look great.

Jens, I was figuring on giving it to Blade Forums from the git. They could auction it off to raise some cash for the forums. I sure never thought it might make the cover of a magazine though. Wow, would that be great!!!!! I can try to get you some aligator skin if you want to work with that, or I have a real nice diamond back skin if you could use it, you're more than welcome to it. I bought to use on a sheath, and this one sure would be a good one to use it on.
