I then got it out into it's element for some camp work and hunting. Unfortunately I left my camera on USB all night and didn't have much battery left when I was out in the woods but I still managed to get some pictures. This is where this knife really excels. I should have sharpened it before I went out but I didn't have the time. It was still pretty sharp when I left but after skinning game and chopping wood all day it started to lose it's edge. Nothing terrible or unusable just wasn't as sharp as I would have liked when I started carving and making some feather sticks. Again, felt great in the hand and no task it couldn't accomplish efficiently.

It was raining and everything was wet so I split a log into quarters and made some small kindling pieces.

After Using it in the kitchen all night the entire blade had a nice patina on it, After batoning and making some kindling it completely wore off.

It was starting to lose it's edge a bit but I managed to make a quick half-ass feather stick and spear since it was raining. I strung up a tarp and hung out for a bit doing some carving. Again worked great absolutely love the knife as a hunter/survival knife.

The rain lightened up a little bit so I decided to make a fire and have some lunch. I scraped some birch bark which is very common up here in the north woods and it takes a spark very well, wet or dry.

Not a chopper but will get the job done if it needs to.

Made a fire and had some lunch now it's time to do some more hunting. Unfortunately my camera was just about dead so I only got a few pictures. I took 4 squirrel and 3 rabbits before calling it a day. I used the bird knife on all of them and it was absolutely fantastic. The tip was controllable enough to pierce the skin of the game without puncturing the guts making cleaning them easy! If I had one of these knives as my own I would probably use it all the time as a hunter, small game and large. I was very impressed.

Squirrel and fried eggs, a Vermont specialty :)

I will sharpen it up, probably use it a little more in the kitchen and maybe get out grouse hunting in the next couple of days and then I will sadly pass this little Gem to the next guy by the end of the week. Soooooo..... where can I buy one?? :)

I also can't forget Sonya, she helped test and break in the knife to.

The HI arrived sharp, and with a slight patina on the blade. It feels light in the hand, and is a really handy size. The first task was shopping and slicing veggies and an apple, the apple for a snack, and the veggies for some lamb chops my wife was making.

Thin apple slices were no problem,

IMG_0276.jpg

chopping up a bell pepper was easy as well.
IMG_0277.jpg

an onion was quickly reduced to cooking size

IMG_0279.jpg

then out to the field for some tea!

batoning thru seasoned oak went well.

IMG_0280.jpg

a few minutes produced enough wood for my tea. The knife worked well yet I would have preferred a slightly taller and more oval handle. It would have given me more grip while working over the oak.

IMG_0281.jpg

the edge dulled somewhat with the oak, so I touched it up on the Gerber steel with a few passes

IMG_0282.jpg

the knife did fine on shaving oak. It has a good grind, flat to the edge, and convexed there, and bit into the wood well, making shavings easily

IMG_0283.jpg

It did not work on my fire steel, the spine didn't seem to be sharp enough for me, mostly rounded edges. so I used my backup hacksaw blade on the fire steel, and had a fire going in no time

IMG_0293.jpg

tea brewed up fine on the oak embers

mission accomplished. a good brew, an afternoon outside on a beautiful fall day with a magnificent view, and a good knife to make it all happen.

My assessment is that this is an excellent knife, very well constructed, excellent grind, holds an edge well, very good size for the field. I would prefer a slightly taller and oval handle, and if it were mine I would file a flat spot with edges on the spine for use with a fire steel.

By the way, it came with an excellent well-crafted sheath to replace the factory sheath,. Kudos to the maker.

This outing was at the historic La Grange College park, on La Grange Mt south of the Tennesssee River and east of Tuscumbia, Al. This view is looking north across the Tennessee Valley
