Magicdot was kind enough to send me a copy of.....
Alone in the Wilderness, Alaska Silence and Solitude, and The Frozen North.
Thanks Magic.

There are some guys on here that are interested in a passaround, so I thought I would try to organize one. I have never done one, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to help me out.

These dvd's can only be played on your pc. They can not be played on a regular ol' dvd player that you hook up to your t.v.

So, this is what I'm figuring:

1) First 11 guys to speak up with a reply in this thread will be added to the passaround list. I have reserved 4 spots for user's that wanted to do this passaround.

2) Send me the following in an email:
Bladeforums user name
Real name
Address
Phone number

3) A list of names and addresses will be included so you can send the dvd to the next guy in line.

4) If everything goes as planned, I should end up getting the dvd back and we can do a second passaround (if there is enough interest). Can't wait to see how long that will be!!!

I'm guessing there will be a lot of interest, so what do you guys think about doing only 15 guys on the first passaround??? Just to keep it simple and hopefully fairly quick.

Should we do more???

Please let me know what you guys think, and please let me know any suggestions you have.

One more thing.......You must claim your spot before Saturday, or you will have to wait til the next round.

Here is the list so far:

1. Rockywolf
2. ss Dragonfly
3. raindog101
4. rksoon
5. DiverDn
6. peripatew
7. ruzster
8. jawilder
9. 1tracker
10. Talfuchre
11. AlexN
12. Joezilla
13. Echo4v
14.
15.

Thanks for any and all help!!!

Scott

I am down for this, thanks for organizing it Scott  I am sending you an email right now. I think 15 guys sounds like a good start, we can do always do a second pass-around if needed. I don't have any other suggestions as I've never participated in a pass-around before, but let me know if I can do anything to help.

Sorry, I just found out that these dvd's can only be played on your pc. They can not be played on a regular ol' dvd player that you hook up to your t.v.

Sorry for any confusion.

Scott,
Just sent off my info to you. Thanks for getting this going! I haven't seen these videos in an age. Can't wait to sit down with my daughter and watch them again.
Dave

..they can be played in your DVD player, but you have to burn them as such. I just put data files on the DVDs I sent you to save my dwindling supply of blank DVDs. ;)

I think you guys better check with the powers that be before proceeding with a passaround of "burned" DVDs. I don't think BF wants to be opened up to liability because of someone else's possible violation of IP laws and facilitating distribution on their forums.

Oh, guess I didn't notice it was a "copy". Thought it was the original. Yep, there may be some IP issues here, eh? Especially touchy situation considering the recent brouhaha over the Mors Kochanski video-burning thing. Scott, what are your thoughts?

I didn't know about the Mors Kochanski video-burning, but we also just had a member leave the forums over copying Hood's Woods material for sale.

Let's put this on hold till we can talk it over. I do need to sleep sometime, I just kid about not sleeping, just because I didn't last night, I have to shut down soon.

Sorry, Esav, that was the incident I was thinking of. You weren't the only one in need of sleep last night, apparently:o

Pronenneke's videos are shown on PBS all the time..

..and the passed around videos aren't being sold. i have the original copies, but ripped them to share w/ other people. I don't see how this is any different than me having 20 guys crowded into my one person apartment and showing the videos..

MagicDot, let me ask you this. You don't see the difference between sending an unauthorized copy for one passaround, and having 20 people watching the video in your apartment. Would you see a difference in sending 20 copies for them to watch in their own apartments?

If you buy any program and make a security copy for yourself only, in case of damage to the original, that's one thing. But by making a copy to send to others, you are depriving the original author and his agents of the ability to sell to those people, who are getting the material for free. That is known as theft of intellectual property rights.

I do see a difference. ..if the people on the passaround decide to make a copy for themselves, then they're in the wrong. If, however, they just view it, I don't see the problem. What would be the difference if I had sent my original copy? I didn't send my copy because things get "lost". ..and what's the difference than lending a CD or DVD to someone? ..if they really wanted a hard copy, they would have bought it themselves just for the sake of supporting the artist's art.

..but I have a different take on "piracy".

..however, if the forums don't want the passaround to happen, that's fine. ::shrug:: ..its no skin off my nose.

My point is that technology has outstripped the law. We know what problems the music industry had with file-sharing. You can buy equipment very cheaply wihich will copy cassettes or vinyl or DVDs or CDs. If the technology weren't so cheap, the original manufacturers themselves couldn't sell them so cheaply.

Where the line is, legally and where Bladeforums has to draw it, when money changes hands. As long as no one is is being charged for a copy, no one is being harmed. Passarounds are OK if a knife or a book is involved. This is no different.

We do have to stop and think about it, though, to make sure the forums are not enabling theft of rights.

I didn't know there was any money changing hands. I thought a pass around was just that: a pass around.

..you're the mod. ..its your board. its your call.

Thanks. There is no money changing hands if the original goes around, and the owner has a copy if anything goes wrong. But once a copy goes out, we have a legally shaky situation.

However, one of the guys has an idea that would work, so I'll ask him to post about it (probably tomorrow).

I'd like to be included if it all works out. Email sent and thanks!

Whether money changed hands or not for the copy sent, it is still a copy. You may have a right to make a backup copy for himself, but any legal justification erases when you then subsequently distributed that copy to others and kept the original for yourself. At that point you essentially entered ito the realm of counterfeiting, and your opinion to the contrary won't mean much in court.

This doesn't just put you at risk, but also BF for facillitating this distribution, and potentially all participants that passed it along. Having a "deep pocket" like BF would make this a particularly attractive target for the video producers. As a former attorney who has spent the last three years assuring video producers that my company was staying on the right side of their copyright protection, I can tell you that they will not be impressed that money did not change hands.

All that being said, I have a legitimate copy of Alone In The Wilderness I am willing to supplyfor the passaround. I suggest that breakthru62 simply returns the copy he has to Magic Dot instead of passing it along and risking any of the above. For legal purposes, I own this copy and am legally lending it to several friends. That is not an activity prohibited by copyright law.

Scott, if you PM me the first person on the list's name and mailing address, I'll get it on the way to him. You are welcome to manage the passaround and to the DVD once the passaround is over.
