Pathfinder Certification E-Course

I don't know about the E Course, but the regular course is great.
Phase 1
Phase 2
Phase 3
RP#141

Not to bash/insult the guy, but who is the certification through? When I hear association, I first think of a company or organization that it is through, making it recognizable in many places. Taking the courses for the knowledge and fun of it would be cool, just not sure what the certification part amounts to.

I saw some of his vids and the look quite good. Lately i was quite impressed by his field suture vid. :D I dont care about any kind of certificate, but this schedule/task/online help thing might be handy! The price is really low, but i wanted to hear some comments before i try it out....

I don't think the guy knows his stuff. I watched almost all of his videos. I think he is a wilderness kamikaze at best. Sometimes I even think he is fraud.

Will probably get flamed for this but its my opinion.

I can understand most of the comments and views of many of the people who have replied.
I would like to just leave you with this thought. Does anyone know the experience level or knowledge of the original person who posted?

It would seem to me that if someone had limited knowledge on outdoors survival, they would gain a tremendous amount of knowledge form a hands on course. I haven't seen anything that he has done on the videos that was unsafe like some other well know experts...

Just something to think about.

I don't know much about his course.

However landnavigation.org has a whole lot of excellent material available for free based on navigating with the Cammenga Lensatic compass. If you work through everything on their site and practice it in a few weeks you will be highly proficient.

Dave Cantaberry is a former Army Ranger.I know from chatting with him he has a genuine care for teaching people. I can vouch for his Pathfinder research Cd.For $9.99 it is a wealth of knowledge on it. As far as business practices I do not know.he has lots of videos on you tube I suggest you watch them and then you can make your own opinion. If you e-mail him I am sure he would be able to give you an over view of his course. just my 2 cents.

I don't know your level of skill or knowledge, but there is plenty to be learned for free online through forums like this one.

As for his self suturing video...not a great idea. I'll just leave it at that.

From what I saw of the pathfinder video's, he seems to demonstrate good knowledge and skills. Now as to what constitutes an e-course, and what do you expect to get out of it?

Personally, I think an e-survival course is about as good as an e-wilderness first aid course, which is about as good as e-marriage counseling and e-scuba diving certification. What I'm trying to say is that I'm not really sure how much you will get out of an electronic course of this type. Perhaps some, depending on their motivation will do well. Lots of people buy self-help books and they can be invaluable to the motivated person, but they are never the same as a hands on instructional series with practicals and of course practical examination/drills/tests.

It might be useful, but knowing how I myself learn, nothing really replaces some good old fashion bush time with a mentor/instructor to teach you skills and putting effort on both the instructor and student's parts to go through a series of training an evaluation exercises. There are a number of physical schools that one can look at which I would suggest although this may be more expensive and difficult to travel to. Kevin Estela is affiliated with the Wilderness Learning Centre as one example. RAT (Randall's Adventure Training) offers courses in North America and South America. There are many other good schools that can be found as well.

I guess it is a matter of figuring out what your goals are and coming up with a plan to realize them.

I'm no newbie, i just lack a bit of inspiration right now - that's all... It's more about getting a structure into my progress and getting my lazy ass up. Haven't done too much on that in the last time. :D I often check the forums and single skills are allways nice, but by now the web is getting more confunsing on a daily basis (i'm reading/posting in 4 other forums as well). Kinda hard to go through it without wasting too much energy on the gazillion youtube-blokes out there (though there is a big bunch of fine knowledge too of course). To me Dave looks not like the worst of them...

@wildmike: yap, landnavigation.org is really great

As for his self suturing video...not a great idea. I'll just leave it at that.

Sure it wasnt done as good/semiprofessional as it could be done, but nice to see anyways...

I have met and spoken with Dave Canterbury in person. He knows his stuff. He is far more knowledgeable than most when it come to living in the bush for an extended period of time. I spend a decent amount of time on numerous 'survival' oriented forums. Everyone has their opinions. And styles. I guarantee that if any one of us were to take a class taught by Mr. Canterbury we would learn something. Hubris is a dangerous thing.
Personally, I like seeing how different people approach a problem...

He was at Dirttime 2009 IIRC, so he's been with some of the best of this stuff!

He has joined with Discovery to make a new survival series and will be paired with Cody Lundin from what I've seen so far.

Take what you read on forums with a grain of salt when there is bashing going on. Usually it comes from "jealousy" more than anything else! ;)

It's not that it didn't look pretty or professional. It's the risk of infection, compartment syndrome, unnoticed tendon damage, etc. It is foolish to practice medicine in the woods when you could easily go to the hospital, even if it is for a youtube audience.

I met Dave and his son at Dirttime 2009. I saw a lot of their gear, camping setup, and a couple equipment demos. Dave and his son have a somewhat different approach than many wilderness survival instructors but I learned several valuable things from them. A few of their pieces of equipment/techniques didn't appeal to me. However, I wouldn't mind seeing/reading more of their material and selecting what I like.
