There's always a bunch of talk about all the tools that everyone has in their shops, but this is just to show what can be done with out all the high dollar equipment. Once the damascus was made all I used from there on was a 2x72 grinder, drill press, bench vise, several grits of sand paper and several files, I did borrow a neighbors acetylene torch to heat and bend the guard, but if I'd have opted for a straight guard I wouldn't have needed that.

OAL 15 1/2" with a 10 1/4" blade. Blade, guard, ferrel, and pommel are from the same damascus ( 600 layers). Handle is Ivory with 6 flutes, wire is Nickel/Silver.

I still want a mill, surface grinder, metal lathe, etc. etc. But you can do a lot of things without them, Patience and determination is the key.

A big THANK YOU to Don Hanson and J.Neilson for their patience in answering my many questions during its construction, I won't be bothering you guys again for a while, so you can check your e-mails again. :D:D

Awesom job!!! It's been said before, Tools don't make knives, makers do!! [tools just make it faster!!:D]

Very Nice Bill !!! If you dont mind me asking, How did you terminate the wire at the ends of the ivory, Is it "hooked into" something? Again very nice. Shawn

Yes, very good work!
You don't need fancy tools, you need elbowgrease, skill and good taste.
Sir, you've proven this.

All the best tools don't make you a master at your craft. It's the amount of skill that makes you a master.

And sir, you are a master!!!

Very nice piece.

Congrats!

Excellent looking piece, Bill.

Patience and determination turn almost into completion.

You going to Duncan"s this month...?

Gorgeous Bill... Is it just me or did anyone else see that dagger and think "MS art dagger requirement" =P Keep up work like that and you'll need to update your avatar with your MS 5 and certificate

Great Job.. Looks like what I need to practice on. I always try to learn the hard way first then go with the equipment. Don't NEED it but it is sure nice to have..

Bill, Has this one got a home? How come the handle looks like its going off a little to the left? :D Very nice piece of work! Not sure if I would have the patience to attempt a handle like that. I know I wouldn't.

There's just something about all of your work Bill that really catches my eye. Another stunning knife!

WOW, thank you all for all the wonderful comments.

S.Knowles, I drilled holes the size of the wire about 1/4" deep in one end of the handle to start the application and on the other end I filed a slot a little smaller then the wire diameter all the way to the center hole, glued the ends in the holes to start then after stretching the wire down the grooves to the other end, placed a small amount of super glue in the filed end slot and tapped the wire down, cut it a 1/4" long and bend it down into the center tang hole. the tang hole was drilled 1/2" wide so the 1/4" threaded end coming out left plenty of room for the bent wires and after the cavity was filled with epoxy and around the wire ends there's no way they'll ever come lose.

Russ, Yep I'll be there unless something unforseen happens and changes my plans. I look forward to going there every year.

Don, Yep that part worries me now, so many things can happen in a period that far off, but the way things were going I was afraid it would take longer, One thing though, being that far off it took a lot of the hurry up pressure off. I will bring it with me when I come to your place sometime this summer so you can tell me if I need to start over again. I would like to get Hank Knickmeyers and several other makers opinions also.

Ray, No home yet, but its not looking for one very hard either. But you never know.:D It does bend a little left, I made it for a left handed hillbilly, now I just need to find one thats interested. :D

Thanks again

Bill
