Patina on my Para

Y'all crack me up! Ya buy a modern knife with modern blade steel designed to be corrosion resistant because that's what you wanted, corrosion resistance....

So you take your modern blade made of corrosion resistant steel and soak the blade to make it corrode..... on purpose......so it can develop a patina..... so it won't corrode.

:p

Welllllll I just couldnt pass up a D2 Para for $99...

I like D2 because I can easily give it a sweet edge (and I'm not a sharpening expert) and I haven't had problems with my other D2 blades rusting. For me its just the CPM-D2 thats giving me a problem. I'd much rather have a darker blade than red rust and pitting.

I'll be in Naples from tomorrow till Saturday and I'm taking my S30V (coated) Military and leaving the Para at home. I just didnt know the Para would give me trouble like it has...

I'm still VERY happy I have a Para! :)

Can you post some pics of the patina? I'm curious if the patina was even throughout. Most of the patinas I've seen are blotchy and uneven except for RMC85. His was almost completely even. I'm curious if yours came out worse, same, or better in terms of being overall even.

I would say worse, after setting for two hours or so I put some mustard on it to give it an uneven look and left the mustard on it for almost an hour, then I clean the mustard of and dipped it in vinegar for a few more hours.
+1

I'd love to see them too hw!

Tomorrow if I remember

Well I bought it for the edge retention and foliage green handles, once I saw the blade showing signs of rust I figured why not.

(:D 3 posts in one, what a deal)

Has anyone done PATINA on other steels such as s30v or 154cm or vg10?

I'm thinking about trying it out on some, I just have to get blanks. I imagine it'd be tougher considering they are stainless steels. :p

Patina H1 anyone? Get that chloride ready.

Nice patina

Mustard and vinegar?

Yep, after I let the blade sit in vinegar for almost 2 hours I put a thin layer of mustard on it and the let the mustard sit for 45 minutes, then I wiped off all the mustard and let the blade sit in vinegar for another 2 hours or so.

Looking great hw! I've been out of town since wednesday with no computer...sorry for the delay in my reply.

I might have to try a soak in mustard.

Do you think this would work with the steel (8CR13MOV) of a tenacious?

I've used the Opinel carbonsteel knives for years and the patina really does work in preventing rust. (even have one that's about 30 years old that I can use regularly without rusting)

8cr is a stainless steel.

I plan to polish mine with FLITZ when it arrives. That does a good job of protecting high carbon steels.

Some people like the look of a patina on a knife, ....I am one of them (the added rust protection is just a bonus)!
