And how exactly did you achieve this pattern?

French's Mustard. You can use any mustard as long as the main ingredient is vinegar (acetic acid). With larger blades I would use a small brush or Q-Tip to apply the mustard in my desired pattern. Because this is such a small blade I applied the pattern using a toothpick that I dipped in mustard. I then let the blade sit overnight (I applied the mustard pattern at 1:30 pm the previous day, went bass fishing the next morning and washed off the dried mustard residue when I got home around 10:30 am. What's left behind is the vinegar (acetic acid) etching in the blade. I sharpened the Spear Point blade prior to the forced patina. The smaller coping blade came from the factory nice and sharp. The factory edge on the spear point left a lot to be desired; now it is shaving sharp. :)

Thanks for the detailed reply. I figured it was mustard, but the intricacy of your pattern on the smaller blade had me wondering what tool you used. Haven't tried patterns on mine with a toothpick yet, but it looks cool!

I've got nothing against forcing a patina, it can help achieve an even look as blotchy patina is an eyesore:eek: and merits cleaning off. Word of warning about using mustard though, it shouldn't be left on too long as it can cause pitting:eek: How do I know? I know, unfortunately...
