It kind of felt like cheating, but bluing is probably the ultimate patina.
except it does not protect against rust.
At least not on my rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders I had when in Iowa. A light coat of Hoppy's #9 (or 3 In One sewing machine oil or motor oil/transmission fluid) on all the metal surfaces was the last step in cleaning. Without the wipe with oily cloth, the barrel and action would start to rust inside a week or two. ☹️
