Patrol Bag Advice

on the lights, i'd convert any incandescent stuff to LED and consider gettiing some AA powered LED lights for general purpose/utility/EDC usa.

some of the AA lights like the ones from Fenix or Quark are lust as good as the 123A powered stuff, but slightly longer and with a slightly shorter runtime.. but way cheaper to feed.

considering that on the gulf coast some of the hurricane related problems affected large areas for extended times, having other options for power can be a good thing.

i've gotten some 140 lumen 1xAA lights for $12. not name brands but great for EDC, around the house type stuff.

all my weapon lights are 123A powered Surefires tho, but with third party LED conversions.

What do you guys think of the 3 day pass from Bugout Gear

The bag would mainly be used to keep in my truck as a small grab and go, just the bare minimum a friend picked one up for me from a PX for $32.

Thanks for the feedback, New to the site its good to have access to quality feedback.

I think this may be my first Bladeforums post! I'm the proud owner of an Izula and I'm going to order a -3 and probably a -4 next week.
Please let me know if I'm violating any forum rules. Here's a link to an article I wrote two years ago about go bags/man purses, http://www.rich275designs.com/Article_1.html
There are some reviews of the various bags as well as a general packing list. Strangely, I don't have a a good knife listed!
Thanks,
Rich

Rich that's a nice write up on tactical / bug out bags. You gave a good solid base of items to start someone off for a tactical based enviroment. I really liked seeing some of the other satchel style bags that you don't really see in articles to often. I think in terms of a quick grab and go bag, Hawkepaks makes a bunch of great bags that are also made here in the USA.

It's not carried so he can patch up the bad guy. It's carried so he can patch himself up, alone, and maybe with an arm not working that can actually reach said subload.

This! As a LEO, what I carry on me is for me and the others in my contact team. If we are showing up to a situation like SHTF, we are there to stop the killing.

If it's an EOTW situation, I'm going to be avoiding people like the plague. Contact is going to be the last thing I desire. It's high stress and demanding and not something I want to be doing with my family involved and/or hauling a ton of gear.

I have taken numerous training courses, and have taken multiple courses at the US Training Center in Moyock. Carbine, shotgun, and handgun. So no I have no .mil or LEO experience, but I'm probably more effective with all 3 than many officers in my city.

Your officers need better training then. With the training I've had and the guys in my area Have had, there are very few civilians I'd want fighting with me unless there was no other option. Most of them, even with civilian "tactical" training would wind up shooting one of us in the back or making the situation worse.

Now, that said some civilians may be more switched on then some LEO's, but in my experience, it's not often. I've seen many people in training scenarios say they'd act one way, but then when it happens they don't do it. During training they'll say, "I wouldn't do that in real life," reality is you will fight how you train.

DAMN!
Somewhere near Detroit?

Sounds like you have a well-thought-out idea. For the type of set-up you're talking about, though, I personally wouldn't be comfortable with going anything less than a Condor II (which is what i have), and might even tend more toward the Vulture II, or the Junglas pack from ESEE. I use the Condor II a lot as a range bag, and the webbing on the outside works well for adding stuff (just canteens for me, for now).

Also, I don't think I'd go anything less than an ESEE-4, unless it was a H•E•S•T. I'd want the extra thickness, personally.

But I'm not expert. I've just got experience with the Condor II, an the ESEE-4 and H•E•S•T.

When I go out of town and don't know what I might encounter... as much as I like my ESEE-3 and ESEE-4, the H•E•S•T is what goes with me.

extra lights, batteries. Practice with your stuff in normal use. So youre accustomed with your gear :) as for scum inching closer and closer, I hear that :( but thats how the world is. Just keep a good eye on you and your family. And for shtf kinda stuff, I don't think any responsible person looks for trouble, and prays they never run into it. But to often, come across it.

I scatter stuff all over too :)

This thread came back from the dead. Pack wise there are a lot of great choices. The ESEE pack is top notch, I think better than the Maxped Condor and it has some room for expansion on the exterior. Another pack that's about the same price is the one that High Speed Gear Inc makes. It's slightly smaller in size, but the exterior is 100% total Molle capable. Which gives you an unlimited amount of choices in setting it up and customizing it the way you want it, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

"The following isn't a criticism, I'm genuinely curious: I know nothing about HAM radios, with whom can you communicate with that portable unit? Just like-minded folks that might could help? Or does it somehow get you connected to the authorities?"
...................................

Depends on where you live. But most cities have an ARES/RACES Ham radio group that volunteers with local Emergency Services and even if phones are down, you can contact someone who can assist you.
Many UHF/VHF repeaters have solar power and can keep re-transmitting for a long time over long distances, even if all you have is an HT.
Get a Ham licence (no Morse Code needed) and a cheap (under $100) handheld ASAP

BTW - Just got the 5.11 RUSH 24 pack and it's an awesome BOB! Hold's tons of gear and built tough.
