Pattern Welded Sword WIP

Sorry for neglecting this thread, but I've been working on other things for the last couple weeks. I don't know when I'll work on this more.

all caught up, and waiting for new pic's.

thank you for posting all the details i have never seen before. I never knew what i was missing. I love working with metal, there is just something about it that appeals to me.

although I would never claim to be anywhere near the competency of the folks around here.

Well, some of you may think I haven't done much on this project recently, and you'd be right. :D But, I have been doing an occasional welding sequence on the billet that will become the hilt fittings. Today I did the last weld, and started patterning and forming the pieces.

The billet that the fittings are made from has 150 layers.

The steels used in the fittings are O1 and L6. The reasons for this are that these steels are deeper hardening than the ones I used for the blade. The fittings are going to be heat treated, because hardened damascus has better contrast than annealed (soft), and if I used shallow hardening steels for the pommel, then there would likely be splotchy areas where it didn't harden, because it's much thicker than a blade. Anyway, it's a possibility, and I don't want to risk it.

Also, being different alloys, the fittings will have a different look than the blade, and I think that's good.

The upper and lower guards will both be twisted, and the pommel will be random.

I didn't get any pics of the welding and drawing out steps, but if you've read the rest of the thread, you should be familiar with those processes.

Here is the wider of the two guards after twisting:

Here it's been cut off of the parent bar:

And here is the block that will become the pommel:

I love these type of threads. They are so fascinating to read through and see all the photos. Good work!

One of my all time favorite threads! Any updates???

Not really. I have a LOT on my plate right now, so this project is on the back burner for now. I still intend to finish it, maybe next year. :)

Glad to know that someone still cares though. Thanks.

Just posting to let you know that more than just "someone" is still interested. I just went back and re-read this thread, and remembered why I was so glued to it. This pattern welded sword is nothing short of marvelous. I can hardly believe all the work that goes into it, and in addition, you have taken the time to share the process with us here. We all understand that life sometimes get's in the way of living, so we will be patient, but do not think for a second that there are not literally dozens, if not hundreds, of knuts counting the seconds for another update. First class work, Phillip.
