I'm shaking with anticipation:) Good luck man!

This qualifies as one of the best instructional threads I've ever seen... Impressive craftsmanship, Phil...

best of luck, and make sure your hat is cocked to the right a bit, as thats when the best welds will be made....lol, oh yeah, and if the barometer is rising and the temp is falling....your sure to have sucess;)

great thread by the way, cant wait to see the results.

I just got back from forge welding it. Here are a bunch of pics captured from video, since I was too busy to take stills. ;)

These three are just showing a blob of flux coming off the billet and splatting on the anvil. I just thought it was kind of cool. :)

I want to make sure to get the very tip welded, so I set it tip down on the anvil, and strike the tang end with the hammer to drive the core into the edge wrap.

wip097.jpg

Then very quickly get it horizontal and strike all over the tip. I can't tell you how pleasant it is to have flux splattering into my face.

I took about 3 heats for the tip, just to be safe.

More hammering pics:

Here I'm wire brushing the scale and slag off:

The fog you see in this pic is steam being driven off of the flux I'm sprinkling on the billet.

Here's what it looks like as I work my way down the bar:

Here it is after the whole thing is welded and cooled. I've forged in some of the taper but not all. I want to grind it clean and inspect the welds before I do any more forging on it.

And that's what's in the next picture:

Here I ground a section at the tang end, and gave it a quick etch to show the pattern. I like it. :) I hope the welds are all good. :p

I'll bet you do like it! What a lot of work, but what an accomplishment.
Looks like it's going to be just awesome.

I, too, like the pattern. Very impressive thread, Phillip. I note you wear eye protection, but no face shield. Your earlier statement, "I can't tell you how pleasant it is to have flux splattering into my face" leads me to question why no face shield? Doesn't the flux get hot?

Yes, the flux is very hot. :) But, it lacks mass, and doesn't stick to skin easily, so it's not that bad. I did get some burns on my hand where it burned through the cloth part of my gloves and got trapped.
I've found that a face shield is too cumbersome for me. Usually, it doesn't matter, because the flux doesn't fly at my face like it is here.
I'm glad for the glasses, though. I big chunk of slag got stuck on one of the lenses. If I hadn't had them on....

Phillip, hot things make me nervous. I grew up with a coal furnace. While we had an automatic feed, we had to remove the klinkers with a three prong contraption. One time the klinker fell off and a red hot piece fell into my shoe. I still have the burn scar on my foot. Be careful and keep well!

Paul

Great looking pattern. I'm anxoiusly waiting for the next posts.

Thanks again for taking the time to show it.
