Pawn shop finds

Ok searched steelmaster on buck forum. Learned a lot as usual. It does have the wedge at the end. I also remember it was up in price. 30% off though but not sure I absolutely have to have one in my collection?

I would have thought that if your phone was capable of editing to cut the picture out it should reduce the picture size, but idk.
The 679 is a great skinner.

Definitely gonna get the 679 but that steelmaster is a mystery to me?

These are getting harder to find.If it's new, then you should buy it,if the price is reasonable.

SS no not new. Rather used and leather is rough. As i recall they wanted $69 for it as well. Was just curious.
Also i like to get info from knowledgeable knife nuts on here real time. True i could never post and just go search and get all info from a 2006-2010 thread like i did earlier.
then not sure why we need a knife forum or a Buck forum? We could just go on the archives and eliminate human conversation all together?? Call it Wikiknifeapedia?
I only say this because a few of my last post i get the “ just type in blah blah i’m sure you will find your answers” I don’t mind someone who throws in some comments and info and then say you can also check blah blah but i’ll bet every question i have asked or will ask has already been answered some place. No fun in that.
I do use Goggle and YouTube often but i like the personal contact i get here. Always will.

There may always be more light to shed on a subject.
Maybe something was learned since those past threads.

Sure it could get annoying if say people were asking about date codes every day, but stuff like this I get to learn things I never knew to Google.

I like to google stuff. But I much prefer being here. There is just no amount of googling you can do that could make up for the stories and experiences shared right here on these forums. I appreciate the literal wealth of generational knowledge, stories/experiences, and passion for sharing factual information.

Oh and nice little cutter you got there.

I use google to some extent and can stumble onto some good articles, deals and info but I’ve seen a lot of misinformation and total ignorance of some posted articles so be careful and use discretion especially if you are buying. Some pawn shops can have much of the same and beware of the so-called rare items and self proclaimed experts who own the store. Lol.
I’ve found this site to be a good resource for information and if any misinformation pops up it is quickly called out with established facts and documentation. There’s just to many bonifide experts who either manufacture or have close contact with the processes and documentation. Not only that but many who have decades of knowledge and experience in the field.

Bone Crusher lol.
The 679 skinner is over priced at the pawn shop. Being that its not that old i looked it up and i can get one on the net for $19.99 free shipping. The steelmaster too is over priced for the condition it and the sheath are in. So totally passing on them.

Nowlan, Buck's Steel Master came out in circa 1973 and was gone by 81-82. I have 2 of them: one has the old English script stamp on the steeling flat and Buck used that stamp from 74-75 thru 1981. So, that helps to date it. My other one has 'patent pending' on the handle and no script stamp on the steel. Thus, I suspect a 1973 model. The wedge at the end was reportedly used to pound thru the sternum during field dressing. Just use a rock or cut a limb for a mallet. This Buck item is hard to find in any condition and forget about with it's original box. The knives are what most everyone is after and
will pass over something like this. Plus, this is a 3 piece item so many times a piece is missing. You're lucky to have found one. DM

the metal wedge bar thingy is coated with
"percipitated borides and carbides"
and supposedly harden and tempered
to cut...

Ok thanks guys. Planning on going back soon so i will look at it more closely. They had a Victorinox knife in excellent condition at a reasonable price that i was interested in too. Just have to get more info to determine which model it is. So will look both over better.
