I often see folks upset about Paypal... the "screw them" type mentality. What is it that makes you upset about them? ... Fees?... transactions gone bad on PP's end?

As someone who uses them for business payments, I can't say enough about the convenience, when compaired to using payment management software and having to worry about customer's CC security and foreign currencies.

Maybe I'm just oblivious to the shortcomings?...

Please comment.

I got screwed out a (not insignificant) sum of money. I filed a dispute and requested a refund. Paypal sided with me. However, they told me that because the 'seller' had already withdrawn the money from the account, they could not retrieve any of my money and all they could do was freeze his account. Since then, I have no problems accepting paypal personal: a.) to take back some money, and b.) that buyer protection is non existent. This was a few years ago though, perhaps things have changed.

Paypal renders a service and they need to be paid for it. I think it just comes down to many people just being cheap bastages.

Some people still can't understand that a "service" needs to be paid for, just like if it were a material transaction.

I think some take issue with the fact that there are certain completely legal to purchase items.

Off their site;
"(h) ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories, or (i) ,certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law"

A buddy of mine got his account locked a few years back because he didn't know and bought a gun.
So I guess some people's issue with paypal is on principle.

I have had no problem with them .

I don't think it works like that, anymore...

13.4 Coverage Amount. If you are eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection and PayPal finds in your favor on your Claim, PayPal will reimburse you for the full purchase price of the item and original shipping costs – with no cap on coverage.

I've used paypal for about 5 years now. 980 transactions (buy/sell) without any problems. Maybe there is something better out there that I am not aware of.

Are these items that are regulated in retail stores? Perhaps there has been legal action taken against PayPal in the past for not adhering to state laws?

I do know one thing for sure... Paypal will revoke your account privilages if you openly pass on transaction fees to the buyer. By "openly" I mean advertise that the buyer has to cover the cost. I personally know two people who had that happen to them. If you feel you must recoupe the fees(cheapskates!!... lol) at least bury it into your price and keep it to yourself.

Something cool for U.S. members is the "business payment" feature where you pay a crazy-low flat fee for transactions. Luckyyyyyyyyyyy.

Paypal in my opinion is good. They provide a convinient important service. I sell on the bay and use them all the time.
Here is my complaint using a recent example.
Final value of 2 knives sold with shipping $625.00 US. Ebay fee's (Does ebay not own Papal?) $50. Paypal fee for the transaction $25,US dollar converted into Canadian funds to enable bank deposit. (Canada cost 1.04 US to buy) $602.87 Another 20$ loss.
So just under a hundred dollars for a $625 transaction seems a little unfair don't you think?

I sold a knife once to a guy in Italy. For Canada Post to offer tracking/insurance, I had to pay more than $50 for shipping...the buyer didn't want that. I ended up agreeing to send the package anyway ($10 shipping cost), and accepting to be paid by PP, making it clear to the buyer I couldn't be held responsible if the package was lost. Murphy's law helping, the package was lost somewhere along the ride to Italy (so he says - I can't verufy that for sure). The guy opened a dispute, and I lost the money, even though I tried my best to explain to PP our agreed "contract". I felt screwed, and I didn't like the feeling at all.

Mind you, I took my lesson and I would never accept to ship without insurance anymore...but that's another topic alltogether...

I agree with Rick,I even had someone steal my Paypal debit card #,they called ME,I got every cent of the $800 in charges to my card..+You can't beat the worldwide customer base and the fees aren't bad if you compare to a consignment gallery or shop, usually 35 to 50%-----

I have plenty of ebay people who don't want insurance on goods purchased, when I post their item into the street box I get it all on video cam. I haven't had to use the video in a paypal dispute but did forward a clip to a potential claimant as proof I had posted which headed off a paypal claim.

That wouldn't hold on a paypal dispute; you'd loose. I emailed my postal receipt to paypal and I still lost the dispute. Paypal will side with the buyer no matter what, based on my experience.

I agree, I usually pass on items for sale that have the "Price" + 3% for fees tag, some even add 3.5-4.5% for fees??!!!

How hard is it to just add the 3% to the total and post that price.

It's not that it's hard, but it may be because if other payment options are offered (money order, EMT), you'd have to post a price for PP payment and a different price for other methods. In that case, I can see why some want to just post the base price, and any fees related to the type of payment offered. Just one way to look at it, I guess.

According to their user agreement... a postal receipt with proof of shipment WOULD hold up in the seller's favour, provided you held up your end of the bargain. Protection for sellers

I guess they didn't consider my postal receipt enough "proof". What's a proof of shipment anyway? Have you tried their "protection for sellers"? I did. I will do my best to avoid relying on it from now on. I do recongnize they provide a service, though. The fees they charge is pretty high IMHO, but they're pretty much in a monopoly situation so all the better for them!
