You know how everybody on the classifieds asks for 3.5% paypal fees. Well I get this email from someone because I listed an ad with payment options being USPS Money Order or Paypal.

I noticed at the bottom of your ad you offer Pay Pal for a 3.5% fee. That is against PayPal’s TOS they consider it a cost of doing business

4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.

You can add the fee to your advertised price and then give them a deal if they want to pay by money order but you can’t say it’s a Pay Pal fee. Someone turned some folks in for that

i always found this odd, but its their business.

whenever i list a knife, i always list only one price. if someone wants a discount for using an mo, im willing to discuss that. but i dont list any paypal fees attached to my sales because of that rule.

It has always confused me even upset me when people post a price for a knife then a price for the shipping and another for the PP fees. My goodness just list it with the total! I pass right over those postings.

I'm not too particular with it being shown with total or not. I can just use a calc and then see if the price is right or not.

I'm surprised about the knife rule, been paying for my knives (60++ so far and counting) with paypal and this is the first I've heard about it. Though I've been buyer and never a seller but who knows what the future may turn out?

I like it when they post something like this

$100 + 3.5% for paypal fees. BTW, no money orders, no checks, no cash.

So i can ONLY use paypal and have to pay extra?

that is particularly strange, since no one buys knives on ebay with paypal.

it is probably just a disclaimer for cya purposes.

PayPal sounds a lot like a gubmint sometimes. :)

Moving from the General Knife Discussion to FEEDBACK ...

 I never add PP fees for my listings either. I look at it as a convenience not to have to wait for money orders to arrive or get lost.
Its really not that much money.
One price TYD, makes life much simpler.

That's an interesting thought---since evil bay now requires sellers to only accept PayPal, shouldn't they stop offering the stuff that PayPal says you can't use it's services for? Wonder what they would say if someone asked them to clarify?

About the original point: I often post a knife for a price that includes shipping but waive the shipping if the buyer uses a MO. That way it's not a PayPal surcharge, it's a MO discount.

When Paypal accepts responsibility for putting food on the table for my wife and kid, they can tell me how to run my business and what expenses I can and can't recover. Until then...

Back when I had a website they froze my account one day because someone noticed an automatic knife on my site. They made me remove all links and paypal logo's from my site before they would unfreeze my money.
These are the same people that begged me to use paypal when they first started up. :jerkit:

So, when you go to the store to buy something, should they add the fees they pay for you to use your credit card?

They can't. It is a violation of their TOS, just like Paypal.

The fees are the cost of doing business. If it is that big of an issue for you, add the fee into the cost of your merchandise, just like the stores do.

I'm one of the guys who follow the rules when accepting Paypal, and (knock on wood) I have never had any trouble from them.
