I believe folks should use the standard payment option to give themselves full protection when they buy my knives. I have no intention of defrauding a customer, but it's only good practice for them to make sure they are covered. I am not a huge paypal fan, but they are the easiest and fastest way for me to get paid for a knife I sell online and generally result in the fastest shipping since there is no delay for me to receive a check and wait for it to clear. I do not ship anything until I know the payment is complete so PP gives them extra buyer protection, fastest payment, fastest shipping while getting me paid efficiently and quickly.
I do not expect a customer to pay the fee. *I* am paying any involved fee for the service PP is providing me. I am the seller. Even though the buyer is the one getting the most benefits it is a service for the seller, just like a shop accepting credit and debit cards. I'm eating that small fee to make life easier for customers in the hope that it will improve sales. That's not to say I don't appreciate it when a customer tacks on a percent or two but I don't expect it and I don't factor the fee into my pricing. I set prices based on the cash transaction.
I do understand the issue for folks like Guyon and others who sell more expensive knives. I will probably do something similar. It's not an extra charge for PP, it's a discount for cash or cash equivalent. At my current prices the fee is minimal so I just treat it like any other incidental cost of doing business like office supplies.
