This is a first to me, I sold a knife today and paypal is holding my $ for 21 days. It says if I provide a tracking # to them from usps, fedex, or ups they will release my money 3 days after delivery. Upon researching this a little, it appears this is most commonly done to ebay sellers, which is odd because I've never sold anything on ebay. I feel like I have no options and they are holding my money until they feel like releasing it.

Funny they took their fee immediately.

I think I'm done with paypal, any other services or ways to sell besides money order?

I had previously sold on eBay some years ago without any issue and his just this year sold a knife, had the same thing, held the $s but said once I had a selling history this would go away, they still refused to release the $s even after the package showed as delivered and the buyer had left +ve feedback for the purchase. I was pissed but, especially internationally, there are few other viable options.

I sold the knife on Bladeforums, I don't know why this is even happening. Time to start looking into other forms of payment.

Apparently, you can request money thru Facebook. My wife sent me a request for money, I denied it! :D

Always get a tracking #, always! I got burned once, and that was all it took.

I think you'll be fine, good luck! :)

I recently had the same issue but the sale was through eBay.
Item was delivered quickly and buyer left positive feedback then went on to claim/return with PayPal without asking any information from me.
Five days later he decided to close the claim/return for whatever reasons and only then I was able to receive payment.

I’m only guessing here and I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus but maybe buyer has extensive return record with PayPal?

Interesting, I hadn't thought about the buyers history being a factor.

God I hope things go well, I have had no real issues with anyone and hope to keep it that way.

To even further muddy the water the other 2 knives I sold yesterday went normal. No holds. Just one persons.

????? Please let us know what happens and what, if any, explanation you get (thanks in advance). Strange-1 of 3 ??? o_O

The buyer having issues does not make sense to me. It is the seller who is inconvenienced here. PP states the following reasons for delaying funds, all in the name of security.
There are several reasons funds may be temporarily unavailable:

1. You’re a new seller with PayPal or you’re an established seller but have opened a new account.
When you’re a new PayPal seller, it takes time to build up enough history to demonstrate a pattern of positive buyer-seller transactions. The good news is you can usually move out of this status by confirming your identity and building up a history of positive selling activity.
If you’re an established PayPal seller, but opened a new account, that account will be eligible for holds until a good history is established.

2. You haven’t sold in a while.
When your selling activity has been dormant for a long time, it will also take time to rebuild a history of positive buyer-seller transactions.

3. Multiple customers filed for a refund, dispute, or chargeback.
If multiple customers file for a refund, dispute, or chargeback, or if you receive a large number of refunds, disputes or chargebacks in a short period of time, it can delay the availability of your funds. The best way to resolve this is to work directly with your customers to prevent, or solve, disputes and chargebacks.
Sometimes it’s possible that your customer filed for a refund, dispute, or chargeback because someone illegally used their PayPal account to buy something. We ask that you hold off on shipping any items when this happens.

4. Your selling pattern appears unusual or has changed.
Unusual sales activity includes: an increase in sales or a change in average selling price, business platform, or type of item being sold.

5. You’re selling higher risk items.
Higher risk items can include tickets, gift cards, consumer electronics, computers, and travel packages.

It happened to me yesterday also. I believe it has to do with the buyer and not us as sellers. When I entered the info PayPal asked for (tracking #) and digging around, the only thing I noticed was the buyer had a non-verified U.S. address. That is not uncommon. I'm not sure that's the reason, but other than a few days delay I'm not worried because it was shipped G&S, with insurance and tracking.

Edit: Thanks Chris. I have recently started selling, about 6 transactions in the last month or two. The amount doesn't seem to be significant, but the number of sales has increased in frequency.

Was trying to say in a nice way maybe the buyer has opened a return/claim? this would put money on hold. If claim has not been opened and tracking is provided through PayPal/delivered you should be able to call PayPal and have them release the funds immediately.

I do not know if it's true or not ... I have a friend that sells through a few sites ... he has a privately owned business and I happened to mention this to him out of curiosity ... he told me it's not unusual for him to get the same issue at this time of year ...

he said PayPal has told him in the past they process so many more transactions around the holidays that some are slow or held for various reasons ... anything from a list of things mostly mentioned in the post by Lone Wolf from PayPals policy.

Hopefully you'll not have to wait long and nothing goes wrong.

I have also been wondering whether to even use PayPal when I list the knives Ive sorted for sale it seems they are becoming harder to deal with whatever the reasoning.

Venmo is an option, no fee and you can't dispute a payment so you can screw people and they can't do anything about it!

I heard a story about a guy who had his PP account frozen for investigation after he sold a Damascus Boker AK and the description line said:

"Payment for Damascus Kalashnikov"...hmm ... can't imagine why that was flagged!

Just did another sale with no restrictions. We're so used to instant gratification that we forget that it used to take days to process charges or for checks to clear. All good by me.

Yea recieved 2 payments this morning and both went normal.
21 days seems silly to me, the fastest I can recieve my $ is 3 days after the item is delivered. I don't know, I guess that fact this came from left field for no apparent reason pissed me off.

I have a couple friends that are non-eBay sellers. This is happening to them also with little to no explanation.

A lot of folks in my business now are using Square.

To those of you who sell, on here, or anywhere, don't you require that the address you're shipping to is confirmed, when using Paypal?

Anyway, what's going on, I don't know. But, I'm interested!

We as users of paypal have little to zero recourse when they decide to hold our money randomly. At minimum I think they need to provide a reason for the hold.

I am not a new user to paypal, I have never had a dispute, I have never had a single issue. Yet they may hold my funds for 3 weeks? Not good.

I wish another competitor would emerge who didn't screw around.
