Did you access your account from a new device recently, like a new phone, etc? I've never gotten that message from paypal, but i've gotten similar ones from other websites after I log on from an "unfamiliar" device. It is odd that you were still able to take money out, though.

make sure you go in thru paypal site as well - to validate the request is actually from paypal..........if it came in an email seperately I would be careful

No same phone same computer so anybody can take money out but cant add any just seems weird to me and i am in no way sending them anything and they say i can Email the info or Fax it ? No way.

paypal wouldn't ask you for that stuff. I would guess that you've somehow been directed to a phony site phishing for info, maybe it's accessed you're real paypal account somehow to make it seem real (if that's the case then you've given them your password).

The list of info the request is everything that someone would need to steel your identity and make your life miserable for the next several years getting it cleared up. I'd log on to paypal and either shut down your account or at least change your password. Make sure you spell paypal right and that you're on the real paypal site.

Call a PayPal rep to confirm the request. I know awhile back they asked everybody for proof of identity because of a law that kidded in this year. Now if you have more than 200 transactions or sell more than $20,000.00 worth of items a year, they will send you a 1099 and you'll accountable for your profit or losses. Best to talk to a pp rep.

They do ask for that info. And in order to validate and keep using paypal, you must send it. It's for tax purposes and in their recently updated terms and conditions. If you are receiving lots of paypal gifts especially, or there is lots of activity on your account, they want you to verify it. I did it directly through their site with no problems.

Yeah. I cant possibly understand why they would ask for your social security number

They dont just want my number they want a copy of the card itself. Just tried Logging in fresh from there main site getting the same message tried going to there service section and its not recognizing this problem. Dont know

PayPal's Requests for Personal Information

Jul-17-2012 01:32 PM

Greetings all!

In response to the recent upswing in posts about PayPal requesting more personal information, I felt it would be a good idea to provide some information and reasoning behind why we’re doing what we’re doing.

In short, to comply with various government regulations, we are required to verify who is using PayPal in certain circumstances.

One of the issues that is causing this sudden interest in your information is our compliance with Anti-Money Laundering regulations as well as various Know Your Customer requirements. Previously, when you signed up for PayPal, we asked you for no more information than your name, email address, physical address, and some sort of financial instrument to make your purchase with.

In light of these regulations we now need to verify the accuracy of the information being provided. So in most cases we’ll ask for your date of birth, social security number, and verification that the address you provided is actually linked to you in some way. We’ll ask you for this information via our secure site, and in most cases the verification is fully automated and you’ll continue with your activity without any trouble. But sometimes that automatic process will fail; some reasons for this may be:

A customer recently moved and the records haven't been updated.
A customer has recently had a name change for some reason.
The customer is quite young and has no history we can verify.
Or at the extreme end, the PayPal account was created with false information.

If any of these is the case, we'll start asking for physical documentation and once we've obtained and verified that information you can continue using your PayPal account.

So that’s the long and the short it. I know that not everyone will be happy with this change to our policy. You’re concerned with your information being secure. So are we. But we’re also concerned with who you’re doing business with and this will definitely help with our ability to eliminate potential issues before they negatively affect anyone.

I live in Canada and my PP account is linked to a bank in Canada. Some months ago PP froze my account and (requested), demanded similar ID documentation. I had used my PP acount thousands of times in the preceding 6 years without any problems. This investigation by PP was 'legit', not phising. Eventually i gave in and within 36 hrs my account was accessible to me.
There is a thread in this forum with all of the details.

go to the contact us on the page and call them theyll give you a one time pass code just enter that in and tell them whats going on, I still wouldn't send them my ssn number I'd offer to send all proofs of identity except for that once someone was your ssn you are at their mercy.

Unfortunately, yes I have had many of the exact same dealings with Paypal. Even way back before they were bought by ebay and became even more of a money hungry entity.

I've even been in a situation where they held my balance of $1,800+ for over six months to verify that it was not illegal. I did finally get my money but having to wait that long was painful.

My advice, give them everything they ask for if you still want to do business with and through them. Otherwise, take your business elsewhere. There are several other online money transfer services available. Just google it.

I have read from a few places that they hold the money so it builds interest for them. Wouldnt be surprised if that was true

Wow and i havent even used them for more than 5 or 6 months now dont think i will even bother with them anymore .

Be very careful with PayPal ...I once had someone buy an apple laptop using my Paypal account. I found out thru the few conformation emails that are auto generated

I've also had my account "shut down" a few times because I was selling "knives".
