Paypal Policy Updates -

As BladeForums sellers, I think we're getting worked up over nothing. It doesn't look like this will affect us much if at all, unless I misinterpreted something.

Apparently the only buyer protection offered outside of eBay sales is for "item not received", which is simple enough to prove either way. This doesn't appear to be changing. Too bad for the honest eBay sellers though, who will become even more vulnerable to scammers than they already are.

The "significantly not as described" claims seem to be applicable only to purchases made through eBay, both before and after the TOS update.

13.1 How am I protected if I have a problem with a purchase?
PayPal Buyer Protection is available for purchases you make both on eBay and off eBay:

Purchases made on eBay
For eligible items, protection is available for both items not received (INR) and significantly not as described (SNAD); and

Purchases made off eBay
For eligible items protection is available for INR only"

I started seeing this chatter on forums late last week. Thanks for linking directly to the legal language. Necessary knowledge for anyone who uses PP.

Thanks for the post, that's good to know! It's still a raw deal if a seller runs into a bad buyer on ebay though. Sure, 45 days or 180 days doesn't matter for an "Item Not Received" dispute. As long as the seller has proof of shipment, there's no reason to worry. For an "Item as not described" dispute though, 45 days (let alone 180!) was already way too long. There's nothing to stop someone from buying a knife, using the heck out of it, and then 5 months down the road open up a dispute, saying it is not as described. IMHO, a buyer should only be able to open this type of dispute a week or two at most.

I don't like this at all.
PayPal is not as 'black and white' as their terms would have you believe, and generally have a huge bias towards the buyer.
This all stems from their need to draw customers to ebay.

180 days is far too long. It opens up all kinds of opportunities for 'great' people to think of 'clever' things.

This will really change who I will be willing to sell to......

To protect yourselves, would it help to take photos prior to shipping or request a photo upon arrival?

Sounds great on the surface, but I suspect it wouldn't matter. Paypal will side with the buyer every time.
