I have never used PayPal and I do not have an account with PayPal.

I'm checking my email this morning and I have an email message from PayPal, notifying me that my quarterly statement is available. So, I go to PayPal's webpage, send them a message informing them that I don't have a PayPal account and if someone's using my email address, it isn't me.

Their response? If I don't want to receive automatic email messages, I need to log into my account and change my preferences.

Morons.

The email you got may have been one of those fake emails trying to get your info.

No, it came from PayPal. The message did not request any information and did not contain any hypertext links. The URL provided for me to go check my account information was the correct URL for PayPal's homepage.

I got the same email from PayPal sent to an email address which I don't have a paypal account linked to. Looked legit to me also, but I just chalked it up to a screwup and just hit the Delete.

Something to watch for, PayPal's real url is:

https.www.paypal.com (note the "s" after the http)

Did yours have that? or was it http.www.paypal.com

paypal defanitely has its share of problems but this one doesn't sound like one of them, it sounds like you got a fake email and linked page like Last Confederate points out, paypal is secured page https. How would they have your email if you didnt sign up with them?

I've used Paypal for over a year, never had a quarterly statement, sounds like a bogus message to me.

Like I said, the URL was correct -- it included https:// and the first thing I did was go to a search engine to look for PayPal's "real" URL, just in case it was supposed to be .net or .org, rather than .com.

PayPal doesn't do quarterly statements like that, either, I don't think. I've had an account for 5 years and never gotten one of those emails.

I've had a paypal acct for several years now. Several times a week I receive messages that look like they are from paypal, both in style and in the sender about my account. Many say that my account will be shut down unless I do something etc.

100% of them are scams.

You were the victim of phishing.

If they didn't ask for any information and gave the correct URL for PayPal, then they kind of missed the whole point to phishing, didn't they.

To make a correction to my initial post, it isn't a quarterly statement, it's a quarterly notification that my account information is available.

Could this just be some bizarre ad campaign by PayPal?

Can you give us the exact text of the message? I've been premium for years now and never had them send me anything like what you're describing.

One goal they WERE able to accomplish is establishing the fact that your email is a valid email address. They've already sold your email to several spam lists, I imagine.

Dear Customer,
You are receiving this notification because PayPal is required by law to notify you at least quarterly of the availability of your online account statement.

The account statement for your PayPal account registered to ********.com can be viewed at any time by visiting our website at https://www.paypal.com/. Once you log in, click on the History sub tab of your Account Overview page to see your most recent statement.

If you need help with your password, click the Help link which is at the upper right hand side of the PayPal website. To report errors in your statement or make inquiries, click the Contact Us link in the footer on any page of the PayPal website, call our Customer Service center at (402) 935-2081, or write us at:

On any given day there are 4,000-5,000 "messages" in my Yahoo email bulk (spam) bin. What's a few more?

What has helped me weed out PayPal e-mails is that ALL e-mails from the REAL PayPal will start off with Dear (YOUR REAL NAME) and fake ones will not have your first and last name in it.

Just call PP, tell them what is going on, and get your credit report. If you see something fishy, call the cops and the FBI. If you're mad that PP is just trying to get your business, you're wasting your time. I would worry if someone has my vital information and is abusing it.
