PayPal

I used to get notes like that ... and still do occasionally. Here's what you can do.

EVERY time you get one of those notes, send it to spoof@paypal.com. They will investigate it and get back to you. If it's real, they will inform. If it's not (like every single case I've submitted to them), they will also let you know.

Well, I tried spoof@paypal.com and received the exact same reply that I received when I tried this from the PayPal website. Demonstrating that a) the original email did come from PayPal and b) they're a pack of idiots because c) I am not now, nor have I ever been, a PayPal account holder.

I got the same e-mail:

Something to watch for, PayPal's real url is:

https.www.paypal.com (note the "s" after the http)

Did yours have that? or was it http.www.paypal.com

The part before : is protocol name. Https is "secure" (encrypted) version of http, hypertext transfer protocol. The thing that comes after the : is FQDN, website name in your case. Afaik one FQDN of the www.paypal.com kind can only be owned by one conmpany/individual, ergo www.paypal.com always belongs to same company regardless of which protocol you use to access it (provided that that company allows for different access methods, such as unencrypted http and encrypted https). Paypal indeed provides access for unencrypted access as well but it immediately redirects you to the encrypted version - type in http://www.paypal.com and you'll end up at https://www.paypal.com (which is the same page, just transferred to you via encrypted connection).

Oh and dsvirsky, you are right about Paypal. It seems that there are many disgruntled former users out there who didn't know better and did sign up,only to lose significant amounts of money :( You can read more about those cases here.
