peanutbutter

Depends on what you're storing it in...

I'm not a nutritionist, but I'm pretty sure PB is high in fat...which is good if you're burning up calories.

It is calorie dense, full of fat and protein, and lasts a good long time. Not much to dislike.

Yeah, better make sure you have something to drink nearby. I've heard that it's great because, as stated above, it lasts forever and is full of nutrients. But heck, I'm sure with all the power bar options out there you'd be better off grabbing some of those instead (bet they'd last just as long too).

I got some peanut butter at the food bank that was packed by the LDS church and it had a five year shelf life.

The only down side I've heard is that because there's oil in it,it will go rancid. But I don't know what the time frame is. Anyone ?

It's high in quality protein and the good fats. Great survival SUPPLEMENT, I wouldn't want to live off of just it but would love to have some with me.

I shudder to think how long peanut butter will last on the shelf, in the jar, after it has been opened. I don't know about it going rancid, I mean, it's peanut oil. :D

I have been checking out raw honey, agave syrup and "Cactus Honey Powder" which is not from a cactus or honey, it's dehydrated agave syrup...and I want to try powdered peanut butter.

Powdered peanut butter has had the oil removed. It is rather expensive but for a couple jars in the BOB along with some raw honey...you could do a lot worse for an incredibly high energy food.

I carried a half jar in my work truck and forgot about it....9 months later I found it opened it and the oil had separated, buta few quick stirs and was good as new. So if a hot summer in my truck couldn't make it go bad then a few months in a BOB arnt going to hurt it, just rotate it out and should be fine.

In the 70s my grandfather had spent a little more than a year traveling throughout africa - nothing kept my attention more than when he used to share stories about his trips.

I remember him telling me that the senegalese children were by far the healthiest, fattest and happiest of all the indigenous african children he saw on his travels - the reason was simple: peanuts :)

senegal is still the peanut capital of the world today.

Peanut butter will last a long, long time until the jar is opened, at which point oxygen can get in and that's when you're at risk of the oil going rancid. But, if you are in a survival situation and just have that jar or peanut butter, it won't last long enough to go rancid.

Powerbars -- doesn't matter what it says on the package, they all taste like crap. I'd rather take those lemon flavored Mainstay life boat rations.

I'd still rather have lifeboat rations.

Just leave them on the ground for 20 minutes, and you get tons of extra protein from the ants crawling on it.

darkwaters is right, you just stir it. We were given some of that LDS peanut butter once. It was the best my wife and I had ever eaten.

We have had different jars of open peanut putter in our pantry shelf for up to 6 months without going bad.

That's true but how long does that take? I mean, I have dug peanut butter jars out of the back of a pantry closet that were easily two years old! We're talking opened, too. I don't know how long they would last. I also wonder if you can smell PB that has went over, I've never noticed any that has so I have never been exposed to that smell.

But, if you are in a survival situation and just have that jar or peanut butter, it won't last long enough to go rancid.

Definitely true.

I hate the brand name powerbars called "PowerBars." MetRx Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough are great and they are more of a meal, content-wise. French Chefs are never going to brag over them but I don't think that's worth talking about, anyway. :D

Clif Bars, Blueberry Crisp, Black Cherry Almond and Chocolate Chip are all pretty good. All of the rest of the flavors are terrible as far as I'm concerned. None of them will ever win a beauty contest. Aesthetically they are the equivalent of a small pile of soft dogshit that has been smooshed flat. :D

The Blueberry Crisp Clifbars are by far my favorite.

As far as how long it takes PB to go bad once opened, I have no idea. All I've ever seen happen was the oil separates and has to be stirred back in. Commercial peanut butter also has beaucoup preservatives and probably lasts longer than simple crushed peanuts.

I figure PB has a shelf life just shy of Twinkies and SPAM.

For those who like peanut taste, I eat the Nature Valley peanut butter granola bar. It's crunchy so it maintains well in the heat and doesn't get sticky. Doesn't require heat or water. Travels well and will last a long time.

I freakin love peanut butter.

Not sure about regular peanut butter, But MRE peanut butter can last till the end of time. Just squeese the packet around a little & tada good as new.
