peanutbutter

most nuts are super foods. make my own "powerbars" three ingredients, cashews, dates(dried with pit removed) and chocolate covered espresso beans. blend in food processor-only trick is to get the quantities of the dates/nuts so that it becomes a ball of "dough" roll out or just shape by hand. they last forever too. good fats for sustained energy sugars for instant energy and of course the caffeine can be a nice boost. easy to carry as you dont need bucketsfull to work. use salted cashews and replace one electrolite while yr at it.

I thought I was the only weirdo who did this. Why is it that everyone who thinks like I do seems smarter?
Because you don't know them well enough. Once you get to know someone, you find out they're just as f-ed up as you are and the glow wears off.

That's what I tell the ladies all the time. :D

is THAT why I caught the mr squeezing honey into his peanut butter sandwich this morning?
You married a smart man.

perhaps I'll try this. i can't stand peanut butter. maybe this will make it NOT suck.
See, I knew you were messed up. ;)

 Man I hate you! Just reading this made me put on weight!
Fat bottomed girls, you make the rockin' world go 'round!

I've read about a relief food designed for Africa that was basically peanut butter with powdered milk and some other nutrients added in. Can't remember the name of it; but it was great because it lasted forever and made the additives do the same; didn't require any special packaging, preparation, or eating instructions; and made people moderate their intake because it's just hard to eat a ton of nothing but peanut butter. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to make some yourself, if you could find what it is called.

I just shared my recipie for plumpynut over on the W&SS in a thread on survival kit food.

Plumpynut is the brand name for a U.N. emergency ration passed out to very badly malnourished kids in Africa. It is made from peanut butter, milk powder, and powdered sugar, and some vitamin powder. It puts weight on kids you expect to die in days they are usualy turned around completely in two weeks or so. Very close to miraculous results. I use it as a backpacking/emergency food.

3cups creamy peanut butter, 2 cups honey, 1-1 1/2 cups milk powder ( I use the milk powder from Bob's Red mill). Mix it up good. If the mix is too stiff, add some more honey, If it is too sticky or creamy add in more dry ingredients. You can add in many other ingredients i.e. protein powder, raisins, powdered sugar, ovaltine, chocolate chips etc. etc. Even oatmeat or five grain cereal.

This sdtuff is extremely calorie dense. Don't eat much unless your expending a LOT of energy cause it wii put the weight on ya quick. Mine has lasted easily a year plus vaccuum packed. I carry it and homemade hardtack on most trips.

Awesome recipe, Mike. Thanks a lot.

Not too sure about the nutrition aspect, but you could take the old C Ration peanut butter, open the tin, light it and as they burn use them to mark LZs and DZs. Never tried it with the MRE 'brand'.
