So far Stabman is confirmed for a Peche Island day on June 12. Peche Island is a city, island park in Windsor, Ont. The Island has no habitable development on it and a great example of Carolinean forest. I will ferry folks from LakeView Marina, Windsor, Ontario to the Island on Sat. morning.

If you are from Southern Ontario then you might be interested in this one. For those of you in Detroit, feel free to join in the phone. Unfortunately, I cannot legally pick up people on the U.S. side so that means you can take your own boat and cross (Its the Island just upstream of Belle Island), or drive over the boarder and meet us in Windsor at the marina.

Perhaps we can get an interest list and I can provide directions further in the week and subject to the sign up. Last year we had about 10 folks out and it was a lot of fun!

Sincerely,

Ken

Just thought I'd add that there's barbeque stands on the island, making for easy, delicious meat grilling.
Island barbeque and chopping wood with big knives; you know you want to be there.:D

I had a blast last year, but unfortunatly I can make it this year,

but everyone that can make it should, good group and a good day

I'm really working on it.... I will let you know for sure, tonight.

I just got back from picking up some shrimp and sausages for the festivities.
Also got a knife giveaway planned. I won't say what it is, but you don't want to miss out.;) The only way to win is to be there.

Saturday is no good for me... the wife is working... just me and the kids. Sunday may have been okay. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Rick

For me it's the same story as last year, I'll be working just a few miles from you guys having all that fun. The GM and AGM are both gone from the club this weekend and the department heads (me) were told in no uncertain terms that we were to be on property this weekend.

Anyway, hope you all have a great time, wish I could have made it.

It's supposed to be 86F and rainy tomorrow. Sunday would be good for me.

I just talked to Ken today, and it sounds like it's going to be tomorrow(Saturday), regardless of possible raininess.
I'm sure he'll be along in a while though to say for sure.:)

Sorry Rick,

I got somebody needing the boat on Sunday for fieldwork purposes. You can always drop by my place and watch me clean my garage Sunday if you like ;)

Depending on what the garage is like, that could be a wilderness situation necessitating survival skills!:D

Well, I went by the marina at around 4pm.

I thought I could reach you via cell phone... no luck.... thought I could pay someone to boat me over... no luck... thought that maybe if I yelled really loud, you'd hear.... they kicked me out of the marina.

So I went to my inlaw's with the wife..... thanks a lot.

Ricky

Yesterday was alot of fun.:)
I'm sure Ken will be by to post pics which I cannot provide due to my crappy camera busting a few months back.
Nice how the thunderstorms went elsewhere.
Too bad you couldn't make it out Rick; hopefully next time.

Peche Island is a city park in Windsor, Ont. Just a 2 km Island that is accessible only by boat. We spent the early part of the day walking the island and then came back and had a fire and nice meal. It was a great day but extremely hot and 100% humidity. I'm surprised we were able to get our bowdrills into embers, even with a bit of rain spitting on us at one point.

Well the day was quite nice and my dog looks like she is in comatose from all the swimming and trying to chase after Joe's pup.

The start of the Sumac Berries, just in flower now, they will be great for tea come the fall once they've turned bright red.

These things look like strawberries, the leaves look like strawberries but they aren't strawberries. Unlike wild strawberries, the fruit grows pointed up not pointed down. Also, they are slightly sweet but more watery than a strawberry and taste more like a diluted watermelon. I went through my wild edible books but could i.d. them. A couple of other members on another forum did identify them as False Strawberry or Indian Strawberry. The island was literally covered with them.

The mulberries are just starting to ripen now. A few ripe ones can be had but I'll give it another few days before they are really ready for the picking.
