Peche Island get together Jun 12

There was a rope up in this tree and Mark went up to explore. Yeah, that big honking anchor on his belt is a BRK&T Clax.

I pulled down some park from a dead E. cottonwood tree and we found this huge spider.

Then we found this tiny snake...

When we returned, we grabbed our gear and made a meal. The gear stuff was a bit of show and tell and handling a bunch of sharps. Joe and Mark decided to rebuilt the shotty fire pit that was there. They came across another one of those huge spiders.

Joe started the fire with bowdrill. Earlier, I had gotten an ember at the beach (which I didn't take shots of) from willow harvested on the trail. I think Joe was using some cottonwood we found on route and an ash spindle.

I'm not sure why he feels the need to do this naked, but if it works it works ;)

I brought a bag of lump charcoal and we used on of the standing BBQ's to cook food. Pork chops, shrimp skewers and sausage made the rounds. Plus, the four of us managed to consume an entire watermelon trying to keep our hydration levels. The food was really good.

The show and tell of sharps...

I know your eye is drawn to the top of the table. What could that be? None other than 420 molecular steel heaven. Mark's dad had one of those 80's rambo knives. He had some nice custom knives also, but everybody just had to handle the vintage old rambo knife.

Lets put that thing next to $900 worth of knives just below it, a Chris Reeves ummaganza (or whatever that name is, sounds like Pink Floyd's 2nd album cover to me) and the S-curve...

Thats about it. After the fire burned down, we packed up and took the small boat ride back to the marina. I think everybody was pretty burned out from the heat and humidity. I did get a chance to swim in the Detroit River during our hike, but that refreshing dip only lasted so long. Overall, it was a great day!

Today, I did clean out my garage. Joe stopped by and I helped him sharpen a nick out of his scandi blade. Then we practiced bowdrill on a piece of sycamore, it was a first for that species of wood for both of us. Its a pretty hard wood, harder then I typically use for bowdrill and it required high speed/low downward pressure to get an ember. Both of us were successful though, making my tally at 11 species now completed.

Looks like you had a blast.... wish we would have connected when I came by the marina.

Crap Rick, did you come by yesterday? We were at the marina from 9:15 - 9:45 am. Sorry man.

I didn't get there until 4pm.... I had hoped to catch a ride across somehow... but no luck.

Michelle and I were done our business at 3pm and happened to be down there at that time. She was just going to drop me off.

Rick

The Knife Giveaway knife was the Spyderco Chinook 3 seen in the group shot.
The scores out of a possible 1 to 100 on the dice roll were:

Joe: 32
My dad: 43
Ken: 3

So the win went to my dad.:)
