Peche Island Get-together (tonnes of pics)

Let's see if this works:
Okay, that didn't work.
Just set up a photobucket account. How do you get pics from there to post here?

Awsome Pics K!

The Poison Ivy looking tree is probably a Boxelder. Often mistaken for Poison Ivy when they're young. The bright green branches has me leaning toward Boxelder anyway.

Poison Ivy sometims has a redish color at the base of the leaves when they're that young. At least thats what I've seen around here. Like this:

Stabman,

Select and copy the line that the arrow points to. Come back here and paste it into your reply.
It'll look like this without the smiley. Thats only there so the line will show, otherwise it would show the pic.

Thanks Doc and Chris. That was probably box elder. There was a tonne of regular poison Ivy about. The leaves on that tree looked identical to the poison ivy. Rick talked about the trick of putting the leaves in a bag to see if it sweated oil (poison ivy) or water (non-poison), but we never proceeded with it.

For those that don't know, Manitoba Maple and Box Elder are both the same tree (Acer negundo).

Tons of good stuff in this thread… :D

…Thanks for sharing my friends.

It was cool to meet some of the Bladeforums members in person. It's neat to be able to put a face to people, rather than just being annonymous screen-names on the web.
Maybe next time we can try forging a knife in the camp-fire coals. That would be old-school for sure!
Couldn't have asked for a better day, that's for sure. No bugs, sun shining, not too much wind, and plenty of food to eat.

Looks like you guys had a great time! All of the pictures remind me of why I like to get out and about. Wonderful thread! Thanks for sharing the pics

Stabman.... +1 at doing some forging next time.

I had a great time and learned alot. My pics would only be doubles of everyone else's so I won't bother posting them. :o

Ken.... Your pictures are excellent... I didn't even know you got most of those shots. Thanks for organizing this outing. I don't think there was any lazing around time... we were constantly learning from eachother and the bush. I'm in, anytime you want to do it again.:)

Box Elder confirmed!!! I bought a bit home (leaves and wood) and got a positive ID. Man do those little ones look like poison ivy! I worked in poison ivy everyday while trimming trails at Point Pelee Nat'l Park and they had me fooled. Once I saw the 20ft tree I had my suspicions.... lol.;)

Jimi and Ken both bought a duffle of knives for us to look at and play with:thumbup:.... the rest of us only bought 5-6 blades... amatures.

The easiest way is to check whether the leaves are opposite or alternate - Box Elder / Manitoba Maple / Ash-leaved Maple / Acer negundo has leaves that are opposite - Poison Ivy - alternate.

Sounds good.:)
Why not post the pics anyway? Might be something not already covered, and it would help make the thread even bigger!

Thanks Doc.... wish you could have made it out, my friend. Ken looked like an old pro at the firebow... you would have been pleased.

I kept repeating myself (the BF crew was probably getting annoyed) that it is better to know a few skills, intimately... than to read a library of W&SS books, never having LIVED the skill, yourself. Cease living your life as a "Human Being" and become a "Human Doing"!!!!

Great stuff, guys.

Ken - sorry, it didn't even look like it was in the cards so I didn't contact you. On the next one, if it looks like it's possible I will take you up on the offer and will be there.

Thanks for sharing all the pics.

kgd...i am not going to read through all of the response right now because I am on a slow connection at work, but "poison oak" is a misnomer. There is not such thing. It is simply a fully matured poison ivy plant. It tends to end up with a moderately thick woody stalk.*

also, it could be a box-elder...they look kind of the same...the only difference I know of, outside of leaf pattern, is that box elder ends up huge...
