People carrying pocket knives w/o clips: what's your secret?

The only pocket knives that I carry that don't have a pocket clip are SAKs, and they all have a keyring. I stick a lanyard on them and carry them in a sheath. This one is my favorite, as it looks classy and is expandable, plus it can be removed without undoing your belt...

You mentioned a sheath not being a good choice for your job, so I'd recommend tying a length of paracord or shoelace to your knife, as most have a lanyard hole or something similar, then allow about two feet of slack. Tie the other end to your belt or belt loop. This way, the knife is readily usable, but very hard to lose even if you drop it.

You could also invest in a slip pouch. It's simply two flat pieces of leather sewn at three sides; the top is where your knife slips in. There are no belt loops; it goes right in your pocket and stays flat so the knife doesn't twist or change position easily. This will also prevent your knife from getting nicked up with pocket change. Here's one from A.G. Russell; this one has a fold-over closure...

You could also try something like this...

Just line your pockets with so many knives that one wouldn't have enough room to fall down horizontally :D.

Most slipjoints I just let fall in my right side front pocket. I don't put anything else in that pocket.

If I'm carrying my large stockman I use this pouch/sheath for it so it stands upright in my pocket.

It depends on my choice of pants. Most jeans have a watch pocketabove the right front pocket. I have a pair in which I took the seam out of the bottom of that pocket. I use it to carry an Al Mar Falcon, or a Leek, a Dozier Thorn, Kershaw Centofante /Onion.Trance is just a bit too wide.

As for slacks, pick up some 2.5 inch elastic, cut it to fit the size you need, and sew it into the inside back of your front pocket. It holds just about anything you want, vertically, no clip required. Tip - measure the elastic so the knife sticks up enough to make it easy to get ahold of.

"I found I can often get a pocket folder to 'stand' in the bottom of my pocket, generally along the seam"
I do the same thing. My Alsdorf sits like this quite nicely. I also carry it in it's leather slip sheath too.

In slipjoints I currently have a large gunstock by Case along with a razor pattern, also by Case. Both are over 3.5" with the razor being around 4". I do the same and use a suede slip sheath that really helps it to stand up in my pocket. I also carry it in my left pocket along with my change and my small travel bottle of Advil. This stuff also helps it stand upright. The right pocket has only my large clipped knife in it.

I try to use the watch pocket, if available. In fact, my blade-o-philia has gotten to the point that I think about how knives would carry when I am buying pants!

When I started carrying knives there was no such thing as a 'pocket clip'. If you wanted to carry a knife, you simply dumped it in your pocket. As I recall, and my recollection isn't always the best, it was a Buck 110 that I first spotted in a belt sheath. And it was right there and then I decided nobody needs to know what I'm carrying on my belt...or in my pockets...therefore, the first thing I do with a new knife is remove the clip...and drop it in my pocket. But that's just me...

i don't wear dress pants exept for weddings or funerals, so jeans are my live in pants. I just drop the knife in my pocket. My right hand pocket is my designated knife pocket, so very little else goes in that pocket .

That part is true for me as well. I seldom wear anything but jeans. Black jeans for work and blue jeans for evenings and weekends.

If I am carrying a nice knife, then:
Keys in the left pocket.
knife in the right.
Pocket watch in the watch pocket.

If I am carrying one of my knives with plastic scales, it just goes in with the keys.

This is what I do with all my folding knives.

Yep, all my slacks whether jeans or dress, have the right hand pocket modified as you have done. Being doing that for a few years now, It's discreet and even faster deployment than struggling with a pocket clip. I have about a 1" bit of lanyard cord sticking out of the top of the pocket, works great!!

First, carry a larger knife. I carry a Cold Steel Gunsite with a 5-inch blade and I carry it in my back pocket, either with my wallet or on the other side. A small slipjoint just sinks to the bottom of a pocket like a submarine and stays there. Then there's the change pocket in your jeans. Sometimes a slipjoint will fit in there quite easily.

Myright, VERY sharp rig- did you make this or buy it? (and if you bought it, where?). I would definitely wear something like this, but before you and JNieporte posted pics of slip pouches, I never even knew they existed.

Hey soupah - It was actually made by a member on this site, Andrew Colgalizer. That's his forum name so you can look him up by that. The back of the sheath allows for a horizontal carry on a belt if so desired, but I don't carry it like that much. That loop does not get in the way of pocket carry.

It's a very well made sheath and holds the knife very securely.

I just wear really, really tight pants.

Mind you it takes a half hour to get it in, and a half hour to get it out.

It's like a gear retention system. It's a packag--actually nevermind, bad metaphor.

Tighter pants do tend to hold onto stuff a little better. I can keep my car key on a lanyard, chapstick, phone, and some change all in one pocket, and they tend to stay pretty separated. It would also be pretty hard for someone to make off with your wallet that way.

I normally carry one knife clipped to my right pocket, and a second knife--usually the "nice" knife I'm carrying, beater stays clipped--lays pretty comfortably in the pocket without contacting the beater.

Maybe not Hipster tight, but I find at least fitted keeps the pocket stuff from getting lost.

I have a small digital recorder and a Case large Stockman that both sit upright in the watchpocket of my jeans. I've found that I can carry most of my pocket knives that way.

In high school, I carried Schrade LB7 in my back pocket, upright, beside my wallet. I usually didn't have a problem with it falling down.

thx - cpr

This issue used to drive me crazy, because I prefer larger slipjoints to tacticals. Eventually I just bought jeans with deeper pockets and dedicated my front left for knife only. My stockmans and Soddies ride upright pretty well.

Well, pocket clips have their uses certainly, but try reaching in your pocket for something else with a pocket clipped knife already in there:grumpy: Unpleasant.

Keep change/keys & a knife separate, the two don't mix well, ever.

Stow your knife in the watch pocket if it's small enough.

Keep your knife in a jacket, top or coat, that solves most problems except in tropical climes:D

I wear suits or jackets and seldom keep my main EDC in the trousers anyway, put em in the jacket, even inside pocket.

Always wear some kind of a back-up knife somewhere on you, you never know if you might lose your EDC...

I seldom clip carry my knives. I've removed clips from some of my knives, others I just carry them in pocket with the clip still attached. On jeans I often carry in the change/watch pocket, although on some jeans that pocket is on the smallish side, although I also seldom carry any knife on an EDC basis that is longer than 3.5" clothes. On pants without that little change pocket, I usually just carry in pocket and live with whatever bulge there is, although my pants aren't usually very tight, so it isn't a problem. I do carry flashlights on a lanyard inside my pockets on occasion, but never knives.

I have a few pairs of pants from L.L. Bean, and they have coin catches in the right front pocket. I just drop my knife in there, and it rides mostly vertical. I really miss it when I'm wearing my other pants, though.
