People who have only one good knife

My hubbie had 2 when we met, Boker Titan 3 for work and a S & M barlow for dress. He's up to 5 now, would be more, but I keep taking the ones I need. Might take number 5

Cody Lundin has used the same Mora for something like 15 years now. Never seen anybody wield a knife as good as he does and he can make it shaving sharp. He is not a knife nut, he just knows to keep it simple and what works. I admire him for that.

That is a big thing about Cody and survival in general.

Keep it simple, stick to what works and you will feel free.

Down here, user knives are opinels of course.
Most people who need a knife without being interested in knives carry one.
Actually it is pretty bad for the market since so good knives for such a low price wipe out competition.

To paraphrase an old cliche; "Beware the man with only one knife, he probably knows how to use it."

You know whom I'm talking about; The guy (or gal ) that isn't a knife chronic like us, but has carried for years some "respectable" blade that is always with them, takes care of all their cutting needs, and they seem to want nothing more. As a fellow who has an above average knife collection around here, I respect and even admire to some extent a person who carries only one. maybe two cutting tools at the most and is happy with that. One co-worker only carried a Buck Rubber grip Vanguard for years, another good friend, a Buck antique single lock-back,always in his pocket (said he sharpened it once a year, wether it needed it or not), another had a SAK soldier.
That being said, what are some knives you've seen people carry that fit the above description? Thanks for indulging me.

My cousin has been to South America and Alaska, and has only carried his old SAK. He worked for an outfitter during college, and even then, I think he only carried that SAK. Either a Vic or Wenger. My father, until he's lost them, has only carried single blade slipjoints for as long as I can remember. Case, Buck, Schrade. El cheapo imports. My mother found more knives in the bottom of the dryer than change.

A lot of friends carry a 110, multi tool, or SAK.

One of my co workers gets by with a Vic classic on his keychain. Right now, most of my use is done with either my Vic alox Farmer or, not really in the vein of this thread, Gossman PSK. I carry Sebenzas every day, but have been using them less and less.

There is a small outfiiter (more of a tourist trap that takes people on kayak trips), down from Rte 30 on the York county side of the Susquehanna river. They sell Boker dive knives, CRKT models, and Opinels. They have the best prices on Opinels I have seen, I might try one tomorrow. I have seen regular folks and knife nuts alike swear by them.

I saw an jungle survival instructor on TV one time whose primary knife was a Henkel's style chef's knife. Just an ordinary kitchen knife put to another use. It looked like it had been sharpened down quite a bit over time.
might have been an episode of survivor man.... not sure.

I could definitely pare it down to one knife, if I absolutely had to. I've often said if I could only keep one knife, it would be my Victorinox SwissTool (the big one).

If I had to choose a knife with only one blade, it would be a Spyderco Endura. The only reason I've bought more than one is I've lost several over the years, but if I hadn't lost the first one, I'd probably still carry it.

my dad always had a sak huntsman, and a sak while he was in the army (clerk typist). Thats probably about 50 years or so of close to the same thing.

There's a few of us on this side of the big pond who like Opinels... not near as many fans as for other knives, but a few! It's almost a "anti-tactical" affectation, plus it's easy to do "poorman's" personalization on one, and if it gets messed up, broken or lost, cheap to get a replacement.

After several years of "tactical" and multi-tool knives, nowadays I'm usually toting my lonely #8 and a P-38 and a Bic lighter, to handle the majority of any problems I encounter. And my pants are a lot lighter! :p

My pops has carried an Old timer stockman for as long as I can remember. Ive bought him SAKs, Cases, even a nice GEC, and he still carries that dang Old Timer. :D

My dad is the exact same way. The only time he carries a different knife is when we go hunting. Then he breaks out with the Old Timer guthook.

One of my brothers used to carry an Old Henry that I think used to be my grandfather's. We weren't knowledgeable knife men back then and the Old Henry has been lost over the years.

My first memorable knife purchase was a Gerber Mark I. I quickly learned that it was no use in the field, so I got a Buck 119 soon after that.

Probably the one knife that has gotten more use than any other for me is the Spyderco Delica. I used it all the time for things around the office and the house. I started traveling a lot and going to courthouses frequently (job related appearances you understand) and I was worried about it getting confiscated if I forgot to leave it at home or in the car. I don't EDC anything now, but I keep a multi-tool in the car. Not quite the same. I blame stupid terrorists for destroying a great part of American culture.

I had this from when I was around 9 yrs old for a whole $2.50 , it got retired about 5 years ago frm daily carry tho I still use it regularly enough .

Agree thye are a grat product for the money - I have accimulated a few on trips to France over the years

I was in languedoc a few weeks ago and looking for trip souvenir - couldn't bring myself to get another Opinel but bought a Laguiole in the Limoux market instead.

Arn't Laguiole slip joints the next step up in France - the gentlemens folder equivalent?

My father carries a SAK or a little opinel or Laguiole. he won't carry the gerber LST micro I gave him years ago - as it is "too good!" I have tried to disabuse him

Man, I figured the Buck 110 and Schrade 80T would be popular ! I got spooked to lose my old Schrade after they went TU, so I took it out of rotation. My Delica (2nd Gen) always seems to be on me somehow, specially in the summer cause it's great to clip on shorts (you hardly know it's there.) I've worn out a few EDC's in my time, and I'm not even 50 yet (almost though). When they get too small or loose, I kind of retire them, and switch to another one. I don't remember Dad (R.I.P.) ever carrying a knife, except a SAK on camping trips. I miss him.
