Perfect EDC knife found..... My 707 sequel just arrived...

Nope, it only says : view profile, add as contact, view forum posts, view blog entries, and view articles......

Handle is a tad small and awkward, but makes up for it with nice blade shape. Nice small EDC for your everyday lighter tasks.

I'm going to take the sensible approach and get a regular one. May be getting one from the folder for sale forum.

In all honesty, this is the ONLY BM I regret selling, and would like to replace as my "going to meeting" knife..

Got one of these for my dad. Great LITTLE knife!!

I've held one at the store but don't have one (yet). I think they are a nice alternative to the Mini-Griptilian.

But this is the one I really want:

Great write up (need pics though). You hit the nail on the head in regards to the amount of blade packed into this thing. It is actually baffling to see how much blade you get, compared to the closed size. My favorite BM by far. Congrats.

I'm on board with a 707 in CF and S90V. How awesome would that be ? The 707 in general is a great smaller EDC. Good size blade , small package. How can you go wrong ?

KEYMAN! That 707 is so beautiful! I love your work and think BM should hire you to design their Gold Class. Btw, do you think i could call benchmade and get an m390 blade for my 707? I wonder if they have any lying around.....

Thanks Krissig!
I love this 707.
I waited quite a while for this M390 LE model to come out.
I knew the satin blade would pimp out sweet.
I think instead of switching your blade out; BM would probably prefer that you just buy another one of their knives. :D

How about one with G10 or CF scales? ;)

Keyman, if I decide to hang onto my 707, I'll definitely have to pick up a set of your scales for it. Outstanding work.

You picked a lot of great knives before then 707 as mentioned in your intro. I like them all including the 707.
One thing I'll say about the 586. Your chief complaint seems to be the assisted open. I hate the assisted open. With a good torx driver it's simple to remove the spring and safety and turn your 586 into an ultra smooth manual.
I was just doing some test cutting through thick cardboard tubing and I found it difficult to get a good grip on the narrow handle of the 707. So while I'd agree that the 707 makes a fine EDC, it would not be my first choice for heavy cutting.

Keyman, that CF 707 has me drooling.....

AF, yeah i always wanted to de-assist but got scared of voiding the warranty and screwing something up when taking it apart. But i might just have to try it.
BTW, you mentioned the 707 not being great for heavy cutting? I was always curious how strong it was and whether i should be afraid of wood or think cardboard, because it always felt like i was forcing it too much.... Whats been your experience with "hard using" the 707? Any blade play developing? And what causes up and down play? Does it result from too much force pushing the tang into the stop pin which could make an indent that would create space for the blade to rock back and forth?

Truth be told, I haven't used any one of my Benchmades a lot. I was a big fan of BM when I was entering adulthood around the time the 710 was introduced. Later I turned to Spyderco and only recently have I begun collecting Benchmade again.
I have little doubt that the 707 is up to any cutting task. If you need a prybar and don't have a prybar then you'd be better off with an Adamas. But just cutting? I have no hesitation to put maxmum force behind a cut through wood or heavy cardboard with the 707.
I was referring simply to the narrowness of the handle which made it difficult for me to hold the handle against my palm between my thumb and index finger when I was really bearing down.
As far as blade play, I've detected very slight side-to-side play on almost all of my axis locks. If the pivot is tightened to remove all play, it also tightens the action so that flicking closed is difficult. A few of my axis locks have slight up-and-down play and I think this is caused by an imperfect engagement of the axis bar onto the tang. If anything it should improve over time. The axis lock is self adjusting so if the stop pin wears, the axis bar should engage further.

This is a great knife. I have one of the black coated versions. They only made 50 so 49 are still floating around out there somewhere.

Not quite a 707/705 but close enough. Love this knife. After Blackwater got into hot water they sold these babies for cheap and I picked up a couple. I don't love recurves but for the price I got over myself. Sign me up for the fan club.

I just saw some earlier comments so I will jump in. I have scores of BM's and rotate a dozen or so through my personal rotation. I am partial to axis locks. In fact they are far and away my favorite lock type. I read about guys with blade play and I scratch my head. Side to side is adjusted easily with the pivot. You can sacrifice smoothness for rock solid lockup with a torx. Knock yourself out. As for up and down play I really scratch my head. None of mine exhibit this ever and I have used a few of mine very hard. I have broken a single axis spring and the knife still locked up tight and I continued using it until I had a chance for warranty repair. I suppose you can physically manipulate an axis to create this movement but I don't induce artificial scenarios to create "failure" in a knife so I can run back to report on BF about it. Lol. The 707 is small in stature but you can run it as hard as you like with no fear. It's size isn't ideal for all tasks but as you can see from my pic I run mine through anything. I use my apex edge pro to get a good working edge and nothing more. Love this knife.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, this is a great thread:thumbup:

In light of recent posts, I think I feel much safer pushing this knife harder now. And AF, good to know the stuff you mentioned about blade play.... I had no idea the axis lock was self adjusting. That puts my mind at ease. Way to go Benchmade! The axis is truly the best lock out there (IMO of course)

The more I use this knife, the more I like it. It just disappears in your waistband (I carry IWB) and you forget you even have a knife on you. It's even smoother than before and the lock up is still rock solid up and down, but I have noticed VERY minor side to side play. But this seems to be more like flex than anything else. I'm just going to leave it be

I tend to come back to designs over time. Much as I said about the 525 now being right, maybe the 707 will get it's chance. I've always liked the blade but thought it too small...yet I now prefer the 3" +/- models as my line of work has changed and so have my requirements.

The one I picks up from the for sale forum arrived today and it is really nice. It will make a geat addition to my EDC rotation.
