Perfect EDC?

I personally don't buy a whole lotta knives because I have champagne taste and a beer budget. I usually buy, sell &/or trade around 8-9 high end knives a year with a constant "selection" of 5-10 EDCish folders.

As far as laws are concerned there is one rule I live by: Don't break two laws at the same time and you're good to go. If I'm goin out on the town for a few/several adult beverages I carry at or under the legal limit. If I'm on my day to day grind I carry what I want to carry. For me the "best" EDC I've come across over the years is the Lg Sebenza. I just find that I really do get that much more benefit/use outta the extra half inch over the Sm Seb. That said, I also LOVE my SnG and Sm Sebenza... both at just a hair under 3" sharpened edge.

IMO the fancier Benchmades, Spydies, Kershaws, ect. still have more in common with the runn of the mill of the same maker than they do with midtechs.

My advice is find a small batch Midtech maker who's design you like and try one. For you I recommend a Sm Sebenza 21.

I agree with several posters- there is no perfect EDC, we are on a constant quest, but there are knives that are closer to perfect than others and they are good enough for today.

Knives and knife makers evolve, I've bought EDC knives in the past that I thought were near perfect at the time, and then something better would come along and I would buy it, then something else better, then ...

I buy the ones that I like and carry different ones on different days. I always have more that I want to buy.

the "perfect EDC". Does such a thing even exist?

If you are like me, the target keeps changing. I'll carry a Delica for a while, which in its own way is "perfect" for EDC. Then I think, "Powernoodle, what if you have to decapitate an Orc?", so suddenly a Cold Steel Espada is "perfect". Shortly thereafter, I think that something thin and light in the pocket is "perfect", and out comes the SOG Flash 1 or CRKT Ripple. And so it goes.

For me, a knife will be the "perfect" EDC knife for maybe a few hours if I'm lucky. Then its one to the next perfect knife. And even when you have 100+ perfect knives in the drawer, I keep looking for one that is even more perfecter.

Tomorrow, my Manix 2 XL arrives. It will be perfect from the time I get it out of the mailbox, until I go to bed.

This thread certainly delivers the laughs. :)

Asking a forum of people what the "perfect" EDC knife is, is like asking what a perfect woman is. So many varied responses.

Also, the OP asked for suggestions in the $30 range.... And people are recommending $300 CRKs? Lol :)

Powernoodle you make me laugh. You really do find some good in everything. A sweet soul? Sure, I'll buy that.

Plus I had a weiner dog named noodles.

I've somewhat stabilized on these four as my main rotation for a little while now. I still do carry others, but most days, it's one of these... plus my SAK Super Tinker. I'm always looking out for new and different knives to try, and if I find one I really like, it'll make it into the main rotation. Sure, with as much as I've spent, I probably could have gotten a few CRKs or even a Hinderer or two, but personally, I like having more variety.

For you, for the $30 I'd suggest a $29-$75 blem Kershaw BLUR from kershawguy for in the city. Many colors/finishes/features on the blur, and it works assisted or not. Out of town, no cop is gonna give you hell over a SAK or multitool.

Kershaw Leek or Skyline in that range are winners. You could always take a look at Spyderco's Byrd line. However, I would try to get something a little more high end, even if it's in the $50 - $75 range. I understand not having a lot of money and going after what I could afford or which offered the best deal.
After I stopped doing that, I stopped and realized what I'd been missing out on and have had and do have several knives, $90+ and can't recommend the step up enough.

Two others in(or around) your range though:
Spyderco Squeak - Excellent little Spyderco Slipit. Excellent for EDC, and a good steel with excellent fit and finish, this is my favorite in your range.

Kershaw Volt SS - Sweet knife with a great feel.

Been loving my vic cadet for a general purpose edc...

 I love carrying my Cadet-- it's slim and light, but gives you a decent selection of tools with a surprisingly-robust blade. But, like others have said, I don't know if there is a perfect knife.

ha ha did you seriously think this thread was going to help you to stop buying knives ? Now you just have more ideas for knives to buy:D

The perfect EDC would be a giant knife case holding every knife that you can think of and can shrink 1000 times it size and fit in your pocket.

Seriously, Victorinox Cadets are really nifty. Slim, great blade, useful tools, and good quality control.

To repeat my latest post in another thread:

My real EDC, the knife I always walk around with, is a red alox Vic. Farmer. I carry it in my left front pocket under my wallet. It's practically hidden there, but easily accessible.

You aren't looking for an EDC. Any small knife would do fine. A Victorinox Classic might even cover you. You just want a perfect new toy. Don't ever stop looking! :)

So what do you guys think? Is there a "perfect EDC" for you? Are you searching for it? Can you give me like a 30 dollar suggestion other than the Ambitious?

To me, a "perfect EDC" is more of a system than a single tool. Probably the very best set-up I've yet to discover is a Victorinox Rambler on my keychain, an alox Vic Pioneer in my left front pocket, and a CRK Large Sebenza 21 Insingo clipped to my right front pocket. Pretty close to perfect for me.

I'll echo what others have already said and recommend a SAK. It's tough to beat a Swiss Army Knife at any price (so darn-dang useful! :D) and you'd have wide selection to choose from for under $30.

Good luck, OP!

So true! I've found the perfect EDC 100+ times myself! Some evenings, I'll switch knives 2 or 3 times. This is my "knife OCD" as my wife calls it. I will say I've come to a system as well, a small clipless knife in my pocket and a larger one clipped to a pocket. Works for me. Good luck in your travels.
