Thanks Art DaveH, I think blade play is still a negative on even a top lock. It indicates sloppiness in the mechanism. It also may shorten the disengagement point on the top lock. I have had several big Cold Steel top locks and every one has had solid lock up. One of the big plusses I find in buying from a brick and mortar store is that you can wiggle test the lock before ever buying the knife. If I order online, I always make sure the company has a straight forward return policy. I test the lock as soon as the package arrives and send it back immediately if there is looseness in the lock up. It delays gratification, but is always the best policy in the long run.
