Perfect Patina

Every Old Timer in that vintage was 1095. Think CV minus the chrome and vanadium. The 58OT is a pretty rare pattern- it's #2 on my list of OTs to find, with the 50OT Scout/Utility as #1.

You are correct S & S. I have three 58OT's and a lot of Ulsters from that time. They are high carbon blades like you say. Ulster polished them to a mirror finish. I said CV meaning shiny like a Case knive. Not sure what I was thinking.

I have a Old Timer Scout Utility and it is not marked with a number. A 50OT is a tough one to find. It is a confusing pattern number. There is some connection between the 50OT and the Scout. I've heard this before.

There is also a 50OT that is same frame the 58OT, with only two blades. They are real scarce, and I've heard of some are genuine bone with milled liners. The Ulster pattern number for the Scout (nont the Old Timer version) is a 114.

Here's a picture of my Prince Albert trio:

By all mean you can copy the picture. I took that picture on a whimsy after finally obtaining the Scout Utility knife, and completing the set. I had been looking for the Scout, and bidding on them for well over a year. In true unpredictable Ebay fashion, I won that one for $7.50 with $4.00 shipping. :D

Only $2.00 and 5 Prince Albert wrappers for that Barlow. I'm in. :D
That can and those three knives are a great set.

I can see some poor guy grinding his teeth, and revving up his buffer, just ACHING to get his hands on Lambertiana's knives!!
Nice ones! The whole history of those knives is still intact!

Lambertiana, those knives are perfect.. I have my grandfathers Case Barlow and it once had patina like that..I let a guy at a knife show, about 20 years ago, talk me into having it polished up..I would do anything to get that look back...There is nothing like that 50-60 years of use to put a perfect patina on a knife..Thanks for posting all these great pics..Oh..Lambertiana..You must be a tree man??

Randy - You are only the second person in ten years to make the connection - are you into dendrology? Sugar pines are magnificent trees, I get to see a lot of them in the Sierras. For your reward, here are a few with reasonably good patina. A Southington, An HSB, and an Ulster:

And just to get Charlie going, here's another Ulster

Beautiful Thread Keep em coming
That Challenge is Ummm Wonderful

In the past year or so I have sold off any and all old knives in my collection that have been buffed or otherwise excessively cleaned. I would have to say that this Joseph Allen rope knife has the best looking patina in my house - Dan

Cool General Post Office knife Rivit with great patina. Looks similar to some Royal Navy knives but without the marline spike. Thanks.

Smiling-Knife - That first one is a gem, it would go great with my suit. I can't quite make out the tang stamp, who made it?
