Performance of BF lately

I will add a couple cents here too. The last few days, it has slowed down to a crawl at times. Saturday the search function simply seized the site up, had no choice but to log on again and it took a fair bit of a wait.

Was it the weather, they had some bad weather though the middle of the US for quite awhile.

certain times are going to bring high traffic, and insanely high traffic means server overloading.
For those who are interested, turning off search for non-paying members seems to have reduced the load by 2/3 to 3/4.

BladeForums actually has been amazingly trouble free for a relatively busy forum site.

CandlePowerForums (CPF) - which I know Spark is well aware of - used to have frequent Server Busy problems - some of which was due to malicious usage, another time it was search engine bots doing indexing. But sizing and scaling was part of the issue too.

CPF seems to have gotten over most of these problems -
they also implemented a Google search box for the site to supplement its own search facilities.

CPF probably learnt a lot from BF - as I used to cite BF as a trouble-free site using the same software.

Hopefully BF can pin-point the problem(s).

As always I am very grateful for BF.

I have a pretty slow 45k dial-up internet connection, then add the slowed-up BF server, and many times the past few days, the darn thing would "time out" on me and I'd have to keep hitting refresh...Or I'd get the "server too busy, try again later" message...Very frustrating.

Paying members should have first dibs on server. Shut it down for freeloaders.
James
I must register a strong objection to being called a freeloader. I only wish this were in W&C so I could tell you where you could put your feelings of superiority which were bought rather cheaply for the price of $50.

Well said!

That's bizarre that it is still happening. What are the times it is happening?

If you think $50 bucks is so cheap, why are you not supporting the forums? Not a matter of superiority, but of supporting a site I enjoy. May I ask why you do not support it? And the same question to you A.P.F.

You may indeed ask.

And I will answer: none of your business.

Not a matter of superiority, but of supporting a site I enjoy.
If this is true, what do you gain from calling people you don't even know "freeloaders"? If not a feeling of superiority, then what? Just a perverse enjoyment of insulting people?

Do i think I get 10 bucks worth of information from the search function? Yeah.
Do I have to pay to search at other sites? Nope.
However, I like this site. I use(d) the search function all the time. Now I can't use it, and I can't afford to pay to register at this time of year, I'm finding myself hardly using this site now at all.
There are a few things I'm looking to search for, as I plan on spending a few hundred bucks after christmas on a knife. Now, I could search for previously answered questions, or I can start a new thread as a 'registered user'. Which would the paying members prefer?
Just thought I'd bring up this problem..

This mental disconnect amazes me. You will spend several hundred dollars for a knife, but you wont spend $10 to research it.

Haha, i knew i was leaving myself open to that one. Yes, i will pay, after christmas, but how long do you spend researching a new knife? I'm fairly new to it, so I'd say give me a few weeks to decide.. That said, until I pay, which I can't do for now, I can't use the search function.
Yet I can post new threads asking questions that have already been answered, about a whole heap of different 6-7 inch blades that im interested in...

I'll just ask again, what would be preferred?

I think it might be preferred that you use the google search method which has now been explained in several of the other threads started by people whining about this very same topic...

I appologise, I didn't mean to sound like I was whining about anything.
I've actually never had a problem with the search function, and personally don't have a problem paying for the service. I will be a paying member after the silly season, i swear..
I just foresaw a problem with new guys asking questions that have been answered before. Much like the search suggestion I just recieved.
Anyway, I didn't mean to sound like an ass.

Instructions for both IE and Firefox users can be found in the thread titled "Google Search?" in this forum. Those instructions will allow you to simply use the search box of your browser to do the needed search. It's not as precise (searching specific forums) but it is better than nothing... ;)

Hey, thanks for the info B.T, are you trying to talk me out of paying up?

I guess I just assumed everyone used the advanced search options that the members get. After now seeing how much i use it (or, how much I really want to use it right now), there's no way I'm not paying up.

I was really only posting this as I did consider the already relatively large amount of posts we get on here, regarding already answered questions, with an easy to use search function readily available for all. I'm not complaining, I just thought the removal of the search function may lead to some unwanted side-effects.

No offence intended.
No whinging, either, I'm not British.

Gentlebeings, be nice to the registered users. For one thing, they're the only potential paying members we have.

Put yourself in the place of someone who is considering becoming a member. You're thinking about it. You see members saying, hey, this is cool! This is a great bunch; I'm glad I joined! How does that make you feel?

Or you see members saying hateful things to you, calling you names, scorning you, acting the way second-graders treat first-graders in elementary school. How does that make you feel? Does it make you want to join them?

No problems at all. I've always wanted to join up and this is the kick in the rear I guess I needed.

I'll be using the google search tip to find what I can about my post-christmas purchase. I've been looking at other sites / forums, but no other bunch of people appear to be as open, helpful and opinionated as you lot.

Oh, and take 'opinionated' as a compliment.

tubezipper does bring up something I was wondering about, Cougar as well. Starting new threads annoys long timers, and well, doesn't help the search when "Cold Steel", "Sebenza", or "Spyderco" pops up in yet another thread. Taking out search kinda makes it hard to want to stick around and eventually pay for membership, which I would say is why Spark himself says it's temporary. Paid forum memberships are the minority on the web, so it's not so easy to expect a large percentage of lurkers and newbies to pay for a year to find out if they like the community and the functionality.

I was gold for close to six years, there's a few personal opinions about things which have postponed my renewal for the last few months.
