Performance of BF lately

With as many "Server too busy" messages were coming up, I don't think Spark felt he had a choice at the time. But I'm pretty sure he's looking for something to resolve the problem as quickly as possible - making the "temporary" as short as possible...

"Server is busy. Try again later." or words to that effect several times. I figured with all the cold, nasty, winter weather across much of the country everybody was just staying indoors and working Blade Forums and the Internet overtime. ;)

tubezipper does bring up something I was wondering about, Cougar as well. Starting new threads annoys long timers, and well, doesn't help the search when "Cold Steel", "Sebenza", or "Spyderco" pops up in yet another thread. Taking out search kinda makes it hard to want to stick around and eventually pay for membership, which I would say is why Spark himself says it's temporary. Paid forum memberships are the minority on the web, so it's not so easy to expect a large percentage of lurkers and newbies to pay for a year to find out if they like the community and the functionality.

I was gold for close to six years, there's a few personal opinions about things which have postponed my renewal for the last few months.

Spark didn't do it to punish or force Reg. Users into being paid members; he did it as an emergency stop gap measure so that people can actually use the site. If the server bogs down; no one can use it and then everyone loses and no one joins. Why would you join a site that doesn't work? You wouldn't. So a drastic temp fix.

One doesn't need the search function to find out if he likes the community; just to find old threads.

yes, exactly, I was just saying the suggestion to shut down search as a punishment for 'freeloaders' seemed rather inappropriate.

It really is conserving CPU resources so everyone paying and non paying can continue to use and enjoy the forum.

If you are non paying member and you think you're being picked on, imagine for a second how it feels to paying members who can't use the forum at all because non paying members are sucking up resources?

Spark is being extraordinary generous of his resources for non paying members, there's no advertising, or deliberate performance degrading like some other sites do.
