Period Correct Reenactment Knives

I agree. That customer may have turned it down, but I don't think the maker will have a problem moving it. Not all reeactors are that picky about the historical details. If all makers of reenactor/period knives stayed strictly PC, there would be few designs for a customer to choose from. I try to make correct knives, especially the trade scalpers, but now and then have to stray into areas of gray, or even beyond in order to subject a little creativity into some.

...but knives were just a tool for most. Wear it out, throw it away, buy another. Most carried working knives. Butchers and scalpers.

The same is true today. Then again there would have been plenty of well-to-do period "knife nuts" with knives that would compare favorably to anything currently on the market.

LRB is the man... I often look at his work for PC inspiration. I think the low key, plain everyday work tools are a no brainer for reenactors. It does seem that most folks are drawn to the iconic figures(whether historically accurate or made up). These are the acceptions to the norm. Great thread so far!

If you haven't already, check out Old Dominion Forge. I can't speak for documentable authenticity but his work is devoted to 18th century period pieces and I don't see much I would call ugly, I have been an admirer of his work for years.
Period styles can be difficult to capture the essence of, you can get the details right and still get the flavor wrong, if that makes any sense. Many re-enactors are very well-studied on their time period and it can take serious study on the part of a maker to meet their expectations.

I don't know how to add a link, but a neat rev war period dagger just sold on live auctions dot com, there are some good pictures that could give you ideas. It has a neat twisted (carved) wood handle style that I have seen before on early knives. And a simple, but attractive s shaped guard.
