We can't hold it in any longer! Pete's Custom Knife Shoppe is ready to go, and will be live and on-line the week ending September 4.

I see no reason why my friends in the Forum can't get in there and take it for a spin - only this time, we are taking your order and building you a knife. For real!

The site has been moved to its final server and domain. To get to the site goto:
http://shoppe.buckknives.com

We still are looking for feedback, and if there's something you would like to see us offer, we would like to hear about that too.

Thanks again for the help :-)

Very nice, Pete, the prices look good and there's a decent selection of blades and handle material. One question though, what blade steel is used on the various Buckcote offerings ?

Well I've got a finger-grooved, NiSi bolster, BG-42, no pins, ram's horn handle model in the works

! Can't wait to see how it turns out

Brian,

Thanks for the PCKS props! It's been a lot of work getting to this point. RE:BuckCote, the base metal is our good ol' reliable 420HC. However, due to the exposure to high temperatures of the Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), the hardness backs down from ~Rc 59 to ~Rc55. This is unavoidable, but also gives the blade more impact resistance, and because you're edging one side, instead of equal amounts from both sides, it makes it a little easier to hone down the steel </IMHO>

As you are one of the first PCKS testers, I had the opportunity to follow your model through our process, and I find a couple of things are worth mentioning.

First of all, the person whom we selected to be our first Designer's Choice knifemaker is a young lady by the name of Dana Queen. I've known Dana for many years - I'm guessing she's a 10-year + employee. Dana is a delightful person to work with, very intelligent and is truly excited about this project. She has throrough knowledge of Folding Hunters, and I know a lot of care will go into each one. Her supervisor is Billy Bates who has spent the last several years in charge of the production of our special projects. Billy's a good guy, and manages to find the humor in all of my ideas.

You're knife's on its way Bob.

Well, I guess great minds think alike! I ordered the exact same configuration knife from the Custom Shoppe yesterday evening
smile.gif
. I strongly considered choosing the Damascus blade, but finally settled on the BG-42 since this will be a using knife. I'm really looking forward to receiving this knife...I suspect there's a lot of nostalgic 110 fans out there who will be delighted at the opportunity to own one of these classics made with premium materials.

I guess there's still a chance that we've managed to preserve our own sense of uniqueness...maybe we ordered different styles of sheaths!

Jim,

I requested the black fold over leather sheath. I too considered going with the damascus but as I already have a 110DM (damascus - sambar stag circa 1989) folder, I felt the configuration I picked for the custom would nicely compliment it plus be a great user. Obviously
smile.gif
you have great tastes!!! <hehehehehe>

Pete,

Appreciate the insiders info on those involved in making my knife. Dana sounds like a superb craftswoman
smile.gif
!!! And I'm sure Billy didn't have to do much other than offer accolades
smile.gif
.

When you say my knife "is on its way" are you saying it has shipped already? If true that's great turnaround on a 8-16 order! You folks said to expect 2 to 4 weeks
smile.gif
!!! I'd sure appreciate a UPS tracking number if it has indeed shipped. I'll post pictures of the completed knife here as well.

I know it has been mentioned before, but it is my hope that not only is PCKS a success but that it warrants adding additional models. My favorite folder is still the 532. I have 4 unique versions now with a 5th due soon. But to be able to get one from PCKS would simply be outstanding.

My only other suggestion is to add file working. You already have engraving. I absolutely would have requested file work on my custom 110. Really wish it had been available. (would have wanted serpentine file work on the bolsters and on top of the blade itself.

Thanks!

Hey Pete,

Any chance of the Custom Shoppe offering Lightning I or II? In particular, a small Lightning with a BG-42 blade and those beautiful Trout scales that I saw on a prototype? Please?

BTW, I love the 110 models you are offering, but I noticed you dropped the checkered walnut. Any reason? How good is the Bahama cherrywood that is checkered?

I'd like to see titanium handles, micarta or G-10 too, lanyard holes, and maybe even thumbstuds as options.

Then I'd have you make me a BG42 blade w/thumbstud and titanium handle with lanyard hole. Maybe get some engraving or the proposed filework too.

As is, I don't particularly like the available handle materials, and aside from blade steel, serations or not, and grooves or not there aren't many options that really let you get something functionaly different.

I'm in the market for a new folder, I'd like to go with Buck, and I think this is a step in the right direction; but as it stands it's more an asthetic thing than a function thing.

Whould Buck consider adding a good carbon steel blade as a blade steel for the custom knife shop.

I too would like a few things that are not offered, like a thumb stud, something in an indestructable walnut micarta handle, and a lanyard hole might come in handy too.

I need some clarification. Are the silver bolsters silver, nickle silver, or white brass?

Pete, you're off to a good start, but we need more "custom" work to be added, not just a "pieces-parts" knife. -Brian (About to hit 40 and getting grouchy)

Hey Pete, Nice looking site! I really should not ruffle your feathers since you are only just down the hall from me but i would REALLY like to see diferent types of Damascus offered. When can i expect my 110 with nickle silver bolsters, mother of pearl sides and damascus blade? And one more thing, how well does M.O.P. stand up to elk blood? I think we should go find out! (field test!)
Thanks Pete

Mine is gonna be BG42 w/the water buffalo scales & silver bolsters. Is it done yet ?

kidding,just kidding.

Pete,
How will these knives be stamped and what, if
anything, will distinguish a Pete's Custom
Shoppe knife from a regular production knife
to the casual observer? Also, will the steel
type be noted on the blade or only on the
certificate of authenticity?
Thanks in advance!

Dan K.

Can blades be had without a nail notch? That's a pretty tall order. We would have to wait for a time when we are running Designer's Choice blades through our component fabrication shoppe. We could hold some parts aside from being nail notched, and keep them segregated through production. It's doable, but the question is when we will have some available. We wouldn't be able to turn a request like that around very soon.

Should we offer all versions of our blades without nail notches? Is it an aesthetic thing?

Joe,

Thanks for the site complements. Hmmm, that's right - you are just down the hall from me. In fact, isn't that you bumming coffee from the engineering coffee maker each morning? ;-)

Okay, a Damascus blade, NS bolsters, Mother 'o Pearl inlays. Now that's what I call a workin' man's knife! Get one on order, then down a few elks with it. You won't be disappointed.

Point taken about the different mixes of Damascus materials. In fact, I'm pleased to hear that many people all ready recommending that we expand the models and choices that we offer. Of course this is our plan, but we need to walk before we run (like the elks who will be running when they see your choice of knife). Damascus is a great match for what we're doing, in that it is decorative, and functional. Share your thoughts with the team, you're always welcome.

Pete,
Thanks for the reply. MY first question is: Why do the 112 and 110 knives have a nail notch in the first place, except as a holdover from slip-joint knives? In all the years that I've owned and used them (early sixties) I;ve never needed that dirt collecting, ugly little notch. Ugly, especially on a knife that is being semi-custom assembled for a goodly price. I'm willing to wait.... I want one in BG-42!!!!!
Dan

Post Script. Yes, Pete, it is an aesthetic thing. I think that if "you" ask this question as a seperate thread, you might be surprised at the results. Yes, I think all blades should be offered with out the notch.
110"s have one of the nicest blade profiles in "knifedom" the lines flow.....then there is that d----d notch.

Pete,

Dan has a point. I'm 52 and have had knives since I was a pre-teen. The only ones that I ever had need of the fingernail cutout on were some brand new (read stiff) slipjoint mini-jackknives of my youth. Every Buck I've owned including the 110, 532, etc is opened by pinching the top of the blade and pulling. The fingernail cutout is an anachronism plain and simple. It should die.
