Phil Wilson is a Custom knife maker who should need no introduction, but for those who don't know who he is. He is famous for his ground breaking work on the CPM steels and was one of the forerunners who started using them for making knife blades. He does his own heat treating in a custom furnace that he made and has done a tremendous amount of work in developing methods of heat treating various steels to get the maximum performance out of them. He is a master at heat treating and his knives are legendary for performance. His designs are developed, tested in the field and highly optimised to give maximum cutting performance, add on the legendary heat treating and we get knives that will perform unlike most have ever seen. His knives are in use by Guides, hunters, fisherman and Chefs all over the world. He has a website: http://www.seamountknifeworks.com/

The following photos are of one of his highly optimised designs in CPM S110V.

Specs are:

CPM S110V @ 63.5 RC
4 3/4" FFG Blade that is .131" thick with a Distal Taper and .009" above the edge.
9 1/2" OAL.
Green Micarta with a Blue Spacer.

That is awesome! I love the spacer in the handle, it's a neat design. Do you have any videos of this knife in action Ankerson?... BTW, congrats on owning this knife!

Just went and got it today, on loan for testing haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet, I do have other reviews of Phil Wilson knives that I have done over in the review forum.

I do have one coming in S110V that will be mine soon enough.

As you know, Jim, that is my favorite steel, and I only wished I'd have stopped at 63 RC and not ruined two blades by taking them to 65+. Beautiful knife. Perhaps wonderment's such as this will provide the impetus for the big-3 to have another go at CPM S110V.

I know it is Bob. :D

Will be giving it a real workout over the next 3 or 4 days or so. :)

Beautiful knife Jim. I'm anxious to see how it places on your scale.

His blades really are beautiful. Very utilitarian. The distal taper and belly on the blade probably make it a cutting machine!

Now that is a slicer! Damn fine knife! I can see how she is working after a good hunt processing game...

That knife looks friggin awesome! Fantastic utility knife.

I will add a small criticism/opinion though, it would look more "finished" with a lanyard tube than the counter sunk hole in the G10, YMMV.

That kind of stuff is buyers choice with Phil. Ask for a lanyard tube and it will be there. Phil is truly a custom maker in all respects. It could have been wood if desired. The more changes from basic model the more you pay and will have to wait, as is expected.

He does have a waiting list but occasionally some that were built for a show might come open. Last I heard he isn't taking custom orders currently due to backlog. You would probably have to check with him about that.

As usual great pictures Jim. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs for you.

Jim, I'm looking forward to your review, although I already know what the results will be. ;) Any other result for a knife from Phil would be simply unheard of.

The next ones will be once I am done cutting concrete, steel and rocks.... :D

Just kidding Joe, don't worry I won't hurt it. :)

I am sure it will do great, just have to get the edge right for the rope cutting 1st off and see how it does there, then I can do the rest of the testing.

It can really only go one way really. :D

You know as well as I do what is gonna happen, I think this will be the 6th or 7th knife of his that I have worked with.

Jim, I trust you with anything I have except Finn the Mastiff. He's too high maintenance for your schedule right now anyway.

Do what ya do Jim. :)

Joe,

You know Finn is my Buddy. :D

Joe,

You know Finn is my Buddy.

Jim

Without doubt Finn would like running around with you. You really have to pay attention to him though. He'll try moving in on your women right in front of you. He's got the charm to make it work too. Don't underestimate the big furry guy. :)

He keeps me out of trouble though. Without him to keep me sane I'd likely be getting myself in positions I don't have the money and lawyers to get out of. :(

As a note do you notice a stronger matrix and better edge stability with cobalt containing steels of similar carbide fractions and hardness?

Just curious. I feel I get less, for lack of a better term microchipping. Those things you can barely see but feel like serrations on the extreme edge.

Joe

Allow me to continue living in my dream world - I'm the first to see the title of this post - Jim is selling this knife - I'll take it! OK, just had to get that out. Looking forward to your, what I'm sure will be great, test results. Thanks again for your efforts (the testing, not the torment). Mike
