Philippines-Jungle Survival Trip

The frog hunting was not a success,

...because there were cobras in the water hunting and it spooked the frogs away.

That would spook me away too.

Good stuff as usual my friend.:cool::thumbup:

Great adventure! I wish I could get away like that!
Way cool brother. Thanks for sharing with us.

Ruben do those bolos have the carabow horn or tire handle?

thanks for posting!

Um, which ones?

I brought in a carabao horn handle bolo and traded it with ED for his rubber tire handle bolo. It is hard to tell the difference in a photo.

This was mine (carabao). It was called a jungle survival bolo when I got it.

Rubber tire handle bolo I ended up with.

This is a different bolo that was also in the camp. It has a very dramatic, curvy drop to it. That to me is a bolo.
Carabao scales with JA marked on it. JA is a blacksmith from Pangasinan, where most real good work bolos are made. I've seen much of his work around that country.

Ruben , Do you like the bolo better than the parang for the jungle?

That is a hard one. I used them both in the same jungle and do like the sharp point on a bolo.

I actually did a story on Parangs and on the uses of a bolo. I really like them both and see why those designs have been around for as long as they have been.

How did you get JA bolos? They are some of the only full tang bolos I've found.

my mistake on the makers marks.
mine are other initials, but still full tang.
the carabao horn handled ones, I got from Grace Geronimo, who I beleave you know
and the tire handled ones are from a guy in PI who sells on e-bay. wish I hadn't lost his contact info...
if my camera hadn't given up the ghost I'd shoot ya a pic, sorry!

awesome pics of home! there's bamboo at the nearby park here and with the balisong that you gave me, i'm a little bit less jealous of your trips to the philippines :)

thanks again!

Bear- awesome as always. It has been a year since I was there and at least a year to go before I get back. For me, I love my leaf bladed Barong- though it is not full tang. But not much bamboo here for me to work up.
Most of my knives are from Batangas/Tagytay area. Bats are like our field mice- edible but not very desirable! LOL! I do like those bamboo/rice pots.

Ingat ka.

By the way Reuben, excellent TK article on the JEST school. Guys like you, Mist, and tstetz will always keep me buying the mag. Keep it up man.

Glad you like it. That is 5160 steel, in a pocket knife. Only in that part of the world!

Tagaytay has a cool little volcano that makes a good day hike.
I like the bats, I call them jungle popcorn chicken.

Glad you liked it; I appreciate your kind words.

I live in the Phillippines and I am glad that you enjoyed your visit. The bigger bats are more enjoyable since its the size of your average rabbit,Im talking about the giant fruit bats but they have since left Subic Bay ,too much tourist noise I guess, but they visit any fig tree with ripe fruits in the jungle and are shot with airguns or 22lr.They are very good tasting cooked "adobo" style. Please do get in touch with me on your next visit,we can hunt for zebra doves or other birds with airguns and fish for snakeheads. The bolos from Bicol region are also very well made although its more pointed than the Jest bolo.I live in Bulacan, province just north of Manila, you pass by it en route to Subic Bay.

as usual great pics and a great story... starting to get a little jealous over here lol..
