Here is a little video on a few of Phill's pieces that are in my collection

2 Strongboys (1/4 inch stock Kwaikens)

2 Kwaikens (1/8 inch)

1 AIKUICHI (1/4 inch stock)

1 KOZUKA

IMHO Phill is the godfather of the modern Americanized adaptation of these Japanese styled blades

I hope you guys like it and I hope it serves to document these style blades

I have a few more Hartsfield videos to do so please bare with me :)

I wanted to cover some of Phills work in these first videos because he was such an influence to me as a knife user and collector .......... Plus I really liked the man :)

Thank a you for the kind words

There really is not much out there so I do believe these videos will help document things

Thanks, Joe.
When I can, I will acquire a Hartsfield again and get back into this cult. It's a damn good cult.

Thanks for sharing Joe.
I am normally a double grind guy, but I feel the need to build a chisel strongboy type kwaiken.

Joe a beautifully produced vid and a fabulous collection.

What I really enjoyed about it is that these knives have such personal meaning to you.
So often now vids are posted as a stealth method of sale. It is so refreshing to see one made just for the love of the knives and their maker; to educate and share.

I look forward to the next one.

Cheers mate:)

Hi Joe!

Thank you so much for all the work you put into your videos! I love to see your collection mate and to learn about these classic pieces! I have never held a PH knife before but hope to do so one day.

All the best,
Alex

Like I always tell you ........ You add class to the game my friend

Thank you for the kind words

As a young man I was rather troubled :)

Phill spent a lot of hours talking to me ....... It helped

The ivory Buda in the pic is one of two that I bought many many years ago

I sent the other to Phill and I'm sure his wife Pat still has it

We were friends :)

Alex

I can say the same about you my friend .... Pure class

Phill made a superb cutting tool ...... That is a fact

Quick story

Phill and my dear friend STeven G are the reason I started posting here so many years ago

I did not know STeven and I was a lurker on here

One day there was a thread on here that was rather negative of Phills work

The regular 400 grit drug behind a car type comments :)

STeven was one of his detractors .... Being the purist that he is :)

My first post on here was in Phills defense

I stated that even though Phills work was far from traditional he simple made an excellent cutting tool in his interpretation of what the Japanese blade was meant to be.

Soon my phone rang and the illustrious Mr Garsson introduced himself :)

That began our very long friendship

I don't know if I've changed his mind on Phills work ....... But he does have one :) and even showed some great respect in his latest Emerson Video ....which made me very happy :)

......so, I chat with Joe for a while about this and that, and he says "Steven...I gotta tell ya, never met ya, but you are a strange little man"....true words!...that's almost 10 years ago. We have hung out in Atlanta, Las Vegas, South Carolina.....and he still thinks I am a very strange little man.

A lot of the people who say the words Phill Hartsfield and Japanese in the same sentence would not know a kozuka(little utility knife in a sword scabbard) from a kogai(utility tool, often split into chopsticks, used to hold hair in place, and with an earwax spoon on the end)...Joe wasn't one of them...he has some top notch true Japanese-style swords in his collection.

I like Phill Hartsfield's work enough to happily own ONE.....met him at Dan Delavan's show briefly a few years before he had passed away, and well before I got to know Joe Paranee. What I can say about the knives in general, is that Phill knew what he was doing, and I respect his work, but it isn't really my thing. My preference is for work that has a finer finish to it.....more Don Fogg than Jimmy Fikes if that makes sense.....

And am definitely NOT a fan of chisel grinds, even though there are a few in the collection....the truth is that it is much harder to make a well crafted double beveled knife than it is a single beveled knife.

But as always, there is a butt for every seat, I love a lot of people who hold Hartsfield in high regard, and wouldn't it be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Joe,

You, STeven, Matt G and several others got me away from the focus of my collecting, forged Bowies.
The Jpz styles are just as exciting and interesting to me, even more research intensive.
Matter of fact, I visited ACK(I know other dealers have Phill's work also) to have a look at the Aikuchi, among other PHs they have, after reading your thread last night.

These threads of yours are real treasures, as well as the knives in your collection.
Awesome videos, enthusiastic and enlightening commentary.
We get it all with you, Joe !

Don't have a Hartsfield, have an RJ Martin. :)

Called Jason K tonight and want to get something small and fighterish with a wood handle
from him so the Hartsfield may have to wait a minute or two. :o :D

Thanks again for the thread !

Started on mine this afternoon.:D

You'll finish yours before I do, bud. I have a roof to put on, now!

Grrrr.....

Joey, you rule. Saw the video this AM as I was sucking coffee, and knew I had to make one. With my own lil' twists, of course. Thanks for the inspiration, buddy.

STeven, your tastes and mine walk the same path in this regard.

Matt anxious to see what ya got up your sleeve

Love your work my friend

As for having the same taste as STeven ...... Be careful what you say have you seen the way he dresses of with out a shirt on :)
