Phill Hartsfield KWAIKEN - AIKUICHI - KOZUKA (VIDEO) New VIDEO Page 17

Started on mine this afternoon.:D

You'll finish yours before I do, bud. I have a roof to put on, now!

Grrrr.....

Joey, you rule. Saw the video this AM as I was sucking coffee, and knew I had to make one. With my own lil' twists, of course. Thanks for the inspiration, buddy.

STeven, your tastes and mine walk the same path in this regard.

Your on buddy. Winner gets the other knife. :D Kidding (seriously, I probably need one from you)
Probably can't do one til next week. Building a 9" blade 3v tanto this week among other things.

But you can make it twice as fast since chisel grinds are only 1/2 a knife :)

Ha! I wasn't gonna say it! : )
I don't have anything against chisel ground blades. I make them on occasion, heck I even made Rolf one! It does generally take more work to grind both sides of the knife symmetrically though.

That said, I think if I make one it should be chisel ground. Might put a fuller in it though. ; ) And of course it would be 3V.

We expect no less :)

I am one of those who love to use chisel grinds and make them. It is kinda like a cult and Joe is our recruiter.

You guys are too cool.

Mine is ready for heat treat. Easily the fastest kwaiken I've made in ages. One bevel and a tip, with a bit of a radius ground into the spine? Heck, no distal taper? No tapered tang? No beveled spine...?

I have a field trip planned for tomorrow, so no knife stuff, then it's up on the roof for who knows how long. Either way, just like Ben, I gotta make it my own.

Adam, you making one? Not like you don't already channel Phill with a lot of your stuff...

We need to get Josh Mason to check in, here. Dude's stuff is uber-clean.

And they keep pulling me back in, yes I will have to make another one or two or three... :)

Looking forward to seeing all of them :)

Great group on here that's for sure

The Tanto I showed in the last video and all of my Wak's and Katanas are double ground

I think chisel grinds do have there place thou :)

After watching the video, it's hard to resist making the whole set.

Matt anxious to see what ya got up your sleeve

Love your work my friend

As for having the same taste as STeven ...... Be careful what you say have you seen the way he dresses or without a shirt on? :)

Fixed your sentence for you meathead....of course he hasn't seen me without a shirt on....that gets reserved for my roomies....and watch it, or i'll post man-love photos of you and David, lol!!!!! I dress AWESOME!!!

Hey Doug, ask Jason to make you a Founder's Fighter in Damascus, you will love it more than almost any other knife you own. It is the perfect fighter.....the one that stuck me in the left hand to the bone.....it is everything you need in a fighter and nothing you don't.

Matt, really want to see what you come up with in a smaller Westernized tanto....Joe knows more about carrying these puppies and training with them than anyone else I readily have access to, so it is always a treat when he makes a video with them.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Best thread yet!
I need to post a pic of my Kombat Kwaiken. Not it's real name. This one is Ben's BDU kwaiken, in a chisel grind. Thank you, Ben.
Adam made me a Ronin. It's like a Hartsfield Strongboy. Badness.
And I gotta say, watch Josh Mason!
Keep up the great work Sam and Matthew!!! Sam... please make a Ti kwaiken. STeven will buy it.
rolf

Joe,
Your enthusiasm is contagious! Like you I wanted a Hartsfield knife in the 80's, but was always unsure how to maintain them as I like to use my knives. Can you post a video of how to maintain the edge/sharpen his asymmetrical edge without using a mechanical belt?

Matt: Was too late on buying the kwaiken you posted recently. Have you ever made or consider making a longer (12"-14" blade) version?

Hi Ray

Thank you for the kind words

Phill really had his heat treat down pat and believe it or not these blades while even being decades old and used don't require much to stay sharp

One case in particular

I was in Africa many years ago and we were making a leopard blind

We built a frame and than proceeded to cut up old muddy burlap bags to use as the walls etc and than brushed the whole thing in

I can't think of a material that would dull blades quicker than mud caked burlap :)

We used the grey 1/8 inch Kwaiken for all of it

I'll never forget how the PH could not believe how the Kwaiken would shave still

I have a pic of us cutting up a Cape Buffalo with it and the cuts were like a scalpel

To sharpen them I just take a jewel stick and lay the edge practically flat

A few passes and than a back drag on the flat side usually does the trick

I have used these blades to the point of getting some surface rust etc

That is never a problem

Some 400 grit wet dry paper wrapped around a block of wood and carefully worked with the grain brings the blade back to original condition

The same thing done on the flat makes the blade scary sharp

A light buffing on the wheel and a quick stropping and the blade is as it was when it left Phills hands

Thank you again

Matt

All of you can clutter my thread up all you want :)

The more Kwaikens on here the better

You guys are the future of this genre and Phill would love to see what he had started :)

Post away

Roofing stuff didn't make it today. Tomorrow. Works out well, because I just made a trip up to Niagara Specialty Metals and snagged my new steel for these...

The homage will be in A2, as its already in process (sitting in liquid nitrogen as I type this), but we're going to take CPM-4v for a spin. Stay tuned!!!

Hey! I have a real job

No fair! :grumpy:

Hey Joe,

Your video is a lot of hard work and is just awesome to see.

Just wanted to clear up a couple of items, on your Strong Boy with the cord wrap and Turkshead in the middle you mentioned it is "Hemp" but I am pretty sure it is tight bound 3 strand cotton cord and with epoxy he used it has turned a bit amber over the years. The Aikuchi you mentioned was brass but it actually is copper.

Those who want to make something similar might help them in material choices.

Really appreciate all you are doing with the videos. I am stealing them and saving a copy as part of my collection :)
