The English/Schrade connection may have only lasted for a few years but I reckon they produced some interesting/unique/quality knives.
You can see in one of the photos differences between the hand scrimshaw on bone knives depicting the same scenes. Hoo Roo

Larry, you are the bling king, that's for sure! Nice collection, I've always liked the five knife set, really is a classy display.

Eric

..I guess Bling King is better than Blinking...
Re the 5 knife set. Less than 2000 Master sets <as the blurb called them> were produced. All have Serial Number starting with 'M' for Master. All have Hallmark with '0' as last digit signifying they were produced in 1980.<My 5 knife set above is the first 1980 Master Series.>
This differentiates them from a later set of 5 produced in 1981 with last digit hallmark '1'. They were sold in 1981 in "a replica of an old English shipping crate". similar but larger than the crates of the Heralds of the Sea series. This 5 set was designated SI-OC2NS.
The interesting differences between both Heralds of the Sea series are:
2-I*XL-SC Matched Set Canoe and Stockman in genuine polished white bone and hand scrimshawed or 'engravings' according to their blurb at the time. Neither knife has Hallmark and is Tang Stamped I*XL George Wostenholm Sheffield England.Original Retail $100. No blade etches."Less than 3000 sets produced" according to the blurb.
2-I*XL-LB One each Small and Medium Lockbacks White polished Bone and Hand Engraved. Retail $150. Both trhese knives have Hallmarks with last digit '1' <1981> unlike the earlier set and they also have different tang stamps to the earlier set.: I*XL Schrade Wostenholm however both have blade etches.Only 2000 of these sets were produced.
I have examples of the 5 set knives with '1' hallmark so they were obviously produced over both 1980 and 1981 in addition to the master series.
Schrade offered collectors who purchased the first Master sets in 1980 identical numbers in the crate 1981 Master Sets.....were they marketers in those days or what?? Hoo Roo.

Display/Details brought up in answer to Brady 806 question re dating his IXL Master Set in the wood crate.

thanks for the data larry , i was wondering about the dates of production, my set is serial#m1497---i posted pics of it in the "your latest schrade " thread ------brady

Thanks Brady. The last digit on the 'Hallmark' should also be 1 signifying made in 1981.

yes larry ,the hallmark does end in 1. the knives in my set look practicaly like the ones in your set (1980). do you know if there was alot of 'handmade' steps in their production?
i cant help but visualize old cutlers humped over making these in england! ha! i know im stereo typing!!--------sitting here now also thinking ive not seen or heard these sets mentioned in any of my knife books? do you know of any that has them? thanks again, brady

ps--here's a single i got recently--came with a ixl stamped leather pouch
#2ps--those herald of the sea knives are beautiful!!

...it may be a cop-out Cal but do you really want me to unpack all these again?....to photograph for your thread?...will this suffice as my contribution if I bring this up..fair bit of I*XL info here... Hoo Roo

Leave them packed, Larry; it will make it easier for you to send them to me! Thanx for the show!

...brought up for Chey2 and his IXL question......without a photo it sounds like a Schrade IXL box and IXL sheath you have with a non IXL knife....most of the Schrade IXL produced in their limited production period are in these photos...for info

I joined the Schrade I*XL club some years ago...thread brought up to show all the "Goodies" they produced in those few years of production...outstanding knives...Hoo Roo

I only own two items from that collaboration but like them very much.

I'm now curious of how many digits were normal serial number for these knives? I looked at mine today, and saw 0543 very distinctly, but what looks like a much lighter (barely visible) 9 at the end. I usually look at things outside in direct sun light when in doubt, but it's windy, stormy, and overcast today. :(
