I'm doing the same. I love the look of wood but it doesn't inspire the same confidence when using a knife that Nathan usually expects or wants us to beat on. Plus, that ECAM looks pretty sweet.

I disagree. I wouldn't be afraid to use my DEK1 with the Cocobolo scales on her. The only reason that I don't is that I want to keep them looking nice. But I believe that they could handle most situations. I could be wrong, I guess.

Both wood and synthetic materials are awesome. (See how easy that was? LOL.) I love both on my various fixed and folding knives.

That said, plenty of hard use knives have survived centuries with wooden handles...but I think I'd be more inclined to have synthetic on a knife I knew was going to see rough / dirty use. For ease of maintenance (and increased durability) if nothing else.

Nothing wrong with wood, especially with how Nathan ensures it is as stable as it possibly can be. The traditionalist in me favors natural materials over synthetics but with that said, I know from experience that the chief attraction to wood for me is its aesthetics. I replaced the Ironwood on a couple of my CPKs because I wanted to be able to comfortably use them without the wood turning black. Ironwood, Cocobolo, Rosewood and a number of the darker, nicely figured woods will turn black with extensive use and exposure.

So no, you aren't wrong in that your knife will hold up just fine but its appearance will undoubtedly be altered.

Feel free to move all that silly ironwood over to me ...... Shameless solicitation taken from Marc's book.

an argument for skipping all the nice brown and red species and going right to ebony (not marbled) or blackwood. I've had bad luck playing the wood lottery and always end up with boring or mismatched scales.
