Hey guys. Learned about Fatwod on this forum and finally got some! Stuff is sweet. So just wondering how you guys carry your Fatwood on hikes and camping trips. I have some of my 8" pieces down to 4" pieces in order to easily carry in various pouches and pockets in my gear.

Looking to protect what I am carrying it in from the sap and such. TIA for any advice or pics!!

I carry some in a few places, but I always keep some attached to a firesteel. That way, I've always got a guaranteed fire.

Added belt hook with some paracord :D :

I just used my SAK awl to drill a hole, big enough for paracord, and looped it through. Then I used an eyelet on the sheath to make a loop to keep the fatwood tightened down. Easily, non-permanent changes.

One thing you can do is wrap your piece of fatwood in aluminum foil. This'll give you a great way to catch the shavings and such, especially in some wind.

I've been carrying a piece in my pants pocket for a couple of months with no problems. Basically the outside of the fatwood will get covered in fuzz then no problems.

Charlie

p.s. love that setup on the sheath. I'll have to try that.

This is a strange coincidence you posting this and I have just been for a hike today and grabbed another piece of Fatwood !!!!

This was the bit I got before cutting it up....

And here is one of the pieces after I had chopped it up....

I just love the smell of the stuff !!!:D:thumbup:

SpookyPistolero and pitdog,

Spooky, I know you're already involved with Klippe, so here's some information for pitdog: I recently launched Klippe, a community-based Wilderness and Survival project to compile information useful to outdoor enthusiasts. So far, many members here have contributed a lot of excellent information and media. You can find more information about the project on the homepage and the sticky thread here.
Anyway, I'll be writing an article on fatwood soon, and you both have some great photos there. Could Klippe use them in the article?

Thank you,

CanDo

Yeah use any pics I post with pleasure, ya don't have to ask !!!;)

One thing you can do is drill a hole the same size diameter as your firesteel into the fatwood, then cut the fatwood so you can epoxy it to one side of your firesteel, just like a magblock, but it would be a fatblock.
I've been meaning to do this but haven't had the time. Right now I carry half a VCB in a pill fob on my keychain with my firesteel.

P.S. I wouldn't really worry about the sap, unless you get it too hot to start oozing.

stingray,

You gave me an idea: If one doesn't want to rehandle their firesteel, one could also turn the wood into a holder/sheath by drilling a hole.

Mike,

Excellent website! There is a lot of awesome information there, and the photos are stunning. I actually happen to be a nature photographer myself, though I'm quite an amateur (just purchased the Pentax K10D (D-SLR) though, so maybe that will change). If you would be willing to have any of your site be reprinted on Klippe, that would be fantastic! I don't mean to hijack this thread, so perhaps we should continue this elsewhere: my e-mail is funditor.info@gmail.com and there is also a sticky thread on Klippe we could chat at. Let me know what can go on Klippe, and I'll do the moving; naturally, I'm quite interested in fatwood at the moment.

Regards,

~CanDo

Gene Ward always used a fire steel with a fatwood handle. I bought a few from his website. I'd probably want a bigger piece if i was camping, but I'd probable use a bic for that. Carrying fatwood doesn't get any easier.

i have never had an issue with fatwood sticking to my other stuff.

i carry some slivers in my matchsafe with a pile of big kitchen strike anywhere matches

sometimes i toss a few sticks into my little catchall sack that i keep in my pack, especially in the wetter/colder months

Awesome invention just for people like us:

Strike-anywhere matches made on fatwood sticks :)

Can fatwood be found wherever there are pine trees, or is it only found in certain regions in certain types of pines? Living here in Northern CA we certainly have our fair share of pine trees.... if nothing else :D
