nice idea, it gives me another one:
why not make a scabbard for the fire steel out of fat wood? it would cover a greater length, and would be removable.
that idea isn't compatible with firesteel loops in sheaths, but for those who carry their firesteels loose, that could work.

Sounds good, got nervous that something happened there for a bit. I sometimes long for the days of yore when we didn't check e-mail for two weeks at a time..... or maybe even before computers.

I just collected a fresh supply of fatwood today, so I'll add a pic.

I've made a few fire steel handles out of fatwood, but now I either just add it on the lanyard that holds my striker or carry a couple pieces in my pack or pocket, don't worry much about the resin.
