Now that I have a few knives more than I practically need, I'm starting to think in terms of "collecting". I'm wondering which production folders you guys would think of in terms of as "must haves".

Suggestions?

Alright a Fellow Texan Knife addict!! Welcome, I too am new here and I am sure you will find this site very informative, and entertaining at times as well! As for must have production folders, ALL of them are must haves!! :p Seriously, I have been bitten by this knife bug for many years now and have WAY more than any one person should, I have even taken to relieving myself of some every now and then on eBay to make room for new goodies!

If I had to say five production folders that are must haves (to get back to your original question) I would say, in no specific order of Priority:
Spyderco Military/ Para-Military, Benchmade 710, Al Mar SERE 200, Emerson CQC-7, and any of the Buck-Striders ( since you said Production, not Custom!) Can you tell I like G-10? Welcome aboard and Happy Collecting!

BM AFCK
Spyderco Calypso Jr
CRK Sebenza
Spyderco Millie
Buck Strider

(Buck 110 is a classic)

if you're collecting - you should have at least one SAK -
suggestions with "significance" -

Victorinox Spartan (the "standard" functions) ~$14; or the Soldier (the actual Swiss army issue knife) ~$17

or just go all out and get the SwissChamp ~$45

Opinel - #8 is the most popular size, in carbon (non-stainless) steel ~$8(!)

at least one Spyderco - for their innovation of the clip, and opening hole -
either the Delica or Endura (the most popular models)
one should get the serrated edge since Spyderco were famous for their Spyder-Edge...

and probably add the Schrade 100th Anniversary Stockman/Middleman -
the 34OT was their most popular model - it's also sad that Schrade has gone out of business on their 100th anniversary - so this is worth having......

agRussell.com still has it at under $20...........

There must be something I'm missing. 5 must-have production folding knives for collecting???? Most people collect what they like. If so, buy 5 production knives that appeal to you. If you collect knives to make $, why buy new production knives???? At least buy from a quality manufacturer no longer producing knives (Schrade comes to mind.) If you collect because you just like knives (like me) then buy what YOU like, not what I or anyone else likes.

I like the approach of suggesting some categories of knives rather than all specific models.

1. A good Spyderco. You choose -- for about $100 you can get a Military, Paramilitary or a Chinook II. For about half that you can get an Endura, Delica, Native or Calypso, Jr. Can't go wrong with any of these.

2. A good Axis lock Benchmade. Again, your choice. For about $110 you can get the 806D2(AFCK), or for about half that you can get a 551 Griptilian. Both are great knives.

3. A good Swiss Army Knife. That means a Victorinox. Whichever model floats your boat.

4. One specific model -- a Buck 110 -- $30 at Wally's World. If you want to go all out, order one from Buck with a BG42 blade and fancy handle material. They aren't that expensive.

5. I don't have one yet but it seems a Sebenza is a must have -- I think maybe you need to own one at some point in time.

Have fun!

Must have? I guess I would say:

1. SAK
2. Buck 110
3. Sebenza
4. Spyderco Endura or Delica
5. Microtech LCC D/A

Even though I don't have all of these, yet anyway. Still need to get that 110 and Delica, one of these days.

I think that these knives have added or inovated in some way, and thus are pretty important base to a "collection". SAK for multi-blades, 110 for a lock, Sebenza for the quality and workmanship, and Spyderco with the clip and hole. The LCC is just a really great knife, and is a great toy to with the hidden release. No collection is complete without one. :D

ok, "collecting" might be the wrong word

let's just say what would be your five "must have" production folders...

Buck 110....Kind of the elder statesman of tactical knives
BM 690....Beautifully done, excellent design, materials execution.
Spyderco Viele....The most beautiful spyderco ever.
Sebenza....on everyone's wish list.
Strider SnG....All about bare bones toughness with the most potent tactical cache around

Welcome to the forums. careful you don't get addicted.

It seems most recommend: The Sebenza; Buck 110; SAK; and 2 others. I guess the other 2 depend on what you're into (tactical, slip-joint, axis, etc) I again would recommend you buy what you like. Sorry if I'm dense, but "must-have" is meaningless to me. I have no desire to own a knife that is on someone's list but doesn't have any appeal to me.

then why do you keep posting on the topic?

OK I'll stop trying to teach. Since it appears you started this post not to learn about knives, but to be told what to think, please go out and buy the "top 5 must-have knives" that everyone tells you to buy. That will validate you as a person.

I could probably come back to this thread once a month and answer differently each time, but here are the 5 as it sit with me now

1-Benchmade 630

2-Chris Reeve Lrg Sebenza

3-Buck 172

4-Microtech LCC D/A

5-Microtech Terzuola
