1. Benchmade 42-D2C

Aw come on every one needs a dress up knife :D
Of course, but the Sebenza or 940 could serve that purpose too. I'd have chosen the T12 to loose because it is solely a gent's knife.

My choice of 5 is for use, for collecting choose anything you like:

1.- SAK.

2.- Stockman slipjoint, Schrade or similar, or some other small multiblade traditional.

3.- Buck 110, or some other tough locking folder, more modern if you prefer.

4.- Solid fixed blade 4 to 5 inch blade, lots to choose from.

5.- Good Chef kitchen knife, Henkels or similar.

Five is not enough, I want more.

My favorite in no particular order

1) SAK
2) Sebenza
3) Mnandi
4) Microtech LCC
5) Puma Duke

kee ;)

What the hey, I'll play but I think I only need 4 picks!

1) Sebenza - best production folder.

2) Spyderco Endura - opening hole, pocket clip, and serrations defines the pocket knife revolution.

3) Busse Active Duty - Great fixed blade, high quality, tough and a reasonable size.

4) Benchmade Axis lock of some kind, your preference.

Since when does a Puma Duke, a Henckels Chef's knife or a Busse active duty fit the mold of a production folder???

1.Fallkniven U2
2.Al Mar SERE 2000
3.Emerson Commander
4.Benchmade Skirmish
5.Any Benchmade Axis lock folder

Camillus edc D2 AG.RUSSEL
BOA de Kershaw
Dominator Camillus
Benchmade 910 HSSR
Benchmade 43

1. CUDA Max bowie, nevermind that pesky skirmish get a real big folder with balls and a point;-)>

2. Spyderco Para Military, serrated or at least combo edge, the hole the teeth the clip and a funky lock, some folks seem to like the chinook too.

3. Protec Godfather, high quality, lots of neat options and a classic design

4. Microtech LCC

5. Benchmade Bali, I like the bowie blade and the anodized handles but but whatever floats your boat you gotta have at least one IMO

I'll play along.

I'd categorize the 5 production knives by company/type rather than just a single knife:

1. Chris Reeve Knives folding knife. Any one of 'em.
2. Benchmade Bali-song, I like the 42 myself.
3. Fallkniven fixed blade, the one that suits your needs.
4. Victorinox SAK, the more gadgets the better!
5. Automatic by Microtech, preferably a DA OTF, but whatever floats yer boat.

If you owned all of these knives you'd have a great cross-section of what's out there in the production world by maker and type.

Of course if I went back about 30 years all I ever wanted was a Buck 110, a Case trapper, and an Italian switchblade (not auto, switch). Matter of fact my search for Italian autos brought me to rec.knives, which brought me here.

What a long strange trip it's been... :D :p :D

My choices for production folding knives go like this.

1)One of the old world craftsmanship top of the line folding knives from days of yesteryear maybe an original Wharncliff from the Rodgers and Son's company that made that blade style famous. Or a very old Case or Buck from the early years. Whatever it is it must rate as a first class collector piece.

2)At least one very high quality modern day or slightly older automatic knife, Dalton, Microtech, Protech, Boker, something, but whatever it is it should be a top line model not a cheapy.

3)A William Henry folder for personal carry. (EDC)

4)One good camping and all around knife for the outdoors, field dressings and other heavy jobs. A Buck heavy duty folding hunter like the 110 or the 112 or the Schrade LB7. Something you are not afraid of using.

5)A multi tool of some kind. Either a Victorinox Swiss Tool, SAK or Leatherman of some kind with folding blades.

Hello everybody,

so here is my quintet of knives:

1.) SAK (any type)
2.) spyderco (endura, police, delica, worker)
in my opinion spyderco has become a traditional knife on the begin of new century
3.) buck 110 folder
4.) douk-douk
5.) finish hunter knives (puuko) or KABAR Fighting fixblade

best regards,
JR

Cool thread, I think I'll give this a whirl  My own list, as some others have done, centers around having certain styles of folding knives. Where applicable, I list specific models. I would choose:

1) some type of stockman knife, 2-3 blade, perhaps a Schrade before they're gone. This is a long-enduring design. To add to the classic appeal, I'd get one with bone handle.
2) a SAK. I am actually not a big fan of SAK's; although I do like the idea, I prefer a multi-tool. Still, for collection's sake, this is a classic.
3) a Buck 110. From all I've read, this is the knife that started the folding knife revolution. It is tough, good-looking, and useful.
4) a Benchmade AXIS lock knife. I love the AXIS lock; for EDC, it's my favorite mechanism. I like the 806 (plain ol' cool) and the Griptillian (value for the dollar!).
5) some sort of Spyderco. I am actually not overly fond of Spyderco knives, as they are thinner in handle than I like, but they are a landmark company in the world of folding knives.

I must mention a few runners-up:
6) a Balisong. Cool design and certainly has that gadgety factor. I would probably opt for a Benchmade.
7) an auto of some sort. I don't know much about these, so I'll defer suggestions on specific models to those more knowledgeable than I.
8) a framelock. This is my all-around favorite locking mechanism. There are many companies and prices available; I'd go with either a John Greco Falcon or a Benchmade Skirmish. If money is not a limiting factor, go for a Sebenza.
