pick 5 "must have" production folders

If you want REASONABLE sized knives you may actually carry and use -

1) Al Mar Eagle - old school Al Mar, feels great in the hand, classic lines, and slim in the pocket - was also used a lot by diplo cover guys, referred to as the Green Cover Special due to US Passports being green at the time

2 and 3) Chris Reeve Sebenza with a BG 42 blade - a little older than the current - my own experience leads me to the conclusion that BG42 holds an edge better than S30 or whatever the proper designation of the new steel is, plus it is a tougher steel in my experience. Choose the Classic and the Standard profile

4) Spyderco Endura - plain edge, VG10 blade, real clip - best buy in a semi-disposable one-handed opener. Perfect for the pool, the beach, the road, whatever.

5) Benchmade 710HS - the best of the Benchmade Axis locks, high speed tool steel holds an edge forever. I used mine to cut up a house-full of carpet without dulling it past shaving sharp. Good ergos, great lock, and the knife is fun to play with as well as great to use. Run a little emory cloth on the handle in some spots - these tend to come with the odd burr or raised edge on the handle.

SAK's and Buck 110's you can buy as you need them - the Chris Reeve Seb is really the only folder I am carrying these days. Tried others and they just don't do much for me.

You may want to consider swapping out one of the above for a Strider SNG - it is really lightweight, has a great framelock and a great blade profile - they need a lot of dehorning in my opinion, but it would take a bunch of abuse to break one. Look for the Gen 4 or newer, they have larger pivot pins on the knife.

CRK Sebenza
Buck Mayo or Buck Strider
Camillus Cuda Maxx or Aftermath
Benchmade 630 Skirmish or Ritter Grip
Spyderco 440V Military, ATR, or Kiwi

CRK Lrg Sebenza
CRK Sm Sebenza
BM 710
Spyderco Military
BM42 balisong (hey, I think everyone should at least try one)

You know, it's really hard to pick just five.

I always like threads like this. :)

Ok, here are my picks:

Buck 110 (To me this is like the Colt 1911 in a folder)
Victorinox SAK
Spyderco Delica
Laguiole
Benchmade Balisong

Three knives have been repeated most often in this thread;

Buck 110/112
Spyderco Delica/Endura
Victorinox of your pick

Just an observation!

Special Buck 110 like the Cabela's S30V version

Microtech M/A, either a Socom Elite or an Amphibian

Chris Reeve Sebenza, small or large, your pick (I like the small).

Benchmade 941 series, preferably a custom S30V blade on a carbon fiber chassis, but barring that, a 941-Ti01 probably.

Last one should be a small carbon fiber William Henry like a T-10CF.

You should get to throw in a SAK as they really aren't knives, but more portable tool kits with a knife blade included.

My vote would go for the following:

CRK Sebenza

CRK Mnandi

Benchmande 710

Camillus Cuda Maxx

Buck / Mayo 172

My must haves would be:
CRK Large Sebenza
Benchmade 940
Camillus CUDA Maxx
Buck 110 w/BG-42 blade
William Henry T12-CF

Today I'll say

Buck 110
Case stockman (pick your flavor) or SAK Tinker
Spyderco Calypso Jr.
CRK Sebenza
Strider SnG

But ask me again tomarrow and I'd change my pick of SnG and go with a BM AFCK, or a Al Mar SERE

I would say

Al Mar SERE 2000
Buck 110
Cold Steel Voyager
Spyderco Stainless body knife
Swiss Army Locking knife

Benchmade 42
Benchmade 43
Benchmade 46
Benchmade 47
Benchmade 31

I might be a little biased though.

Well my list would've been identical to Steve Roose's, although I would've had to think long and hard about how to include a Strider, either an SnG or SMF.

Also I want to thank the several people in this thread that have convinced me about the error of my thinking. The first one being, that I should never read or post (guess I'm screwing up by doing both in this thread  ) in threads like this because it means that I need to be told what to think, and that I'll go out and buy the "top 5 must-have knives" that everyone tells me to buy so that I can validate myself as a person. I'm assuming that this also means never reading or posting any opinions on reviews of knives either.
And second, I'm going to get rid of all of my knives with blade lengths that are over 3 1/2 inches as these are not "realistic" carry and usage knives. DDR will probably appreciate this as he'll never again have to refurbish my Maxx.

Everyone's ideal is different, but there do seem to be some folders that are just top notch that everyone should at least get a chance to carry and use once.

BTW, I think the Buck 110 would do for a "tough as nails" folder for most, but I'd consider swapping the WH T12-CF for a SMF or AR.

Well, I usually leave threads like these alone, but based on personal experience my favorite production folders are, in no order:

1) Paramilitary/Military. Just got a Para today and has everythign I love about the Millie in a package that fits my hand much better. Can't go wrong with either.

2) Spyderco Wegner. Out of production, but possibly my favorite knife ever.

3) Benchmade Pinnacle. I love it.

4) Endura. I use it all the time.

5) Case Canoe with honey colored bone. What a knife!

I been giving this some thought and here is what I came up with.
BUCK 110
3 7/8-4 1/4 inch carbon steel stockman.
Swiss Army Knife, you pick the model. Tinker is my favorite.
New fangled one hand opening superknife. :footinmou BM 556 is my pick.
Barlow or Jack knife with carbon steel.

Sounds like fun so I'll give it a shot.

Current production:

Benchmade classic AFCK
BM 806D2(the Axis Lock version of the AFCK)
Camillus Maxx
Spyderco Chinook II
Al Mar SERE 2000

I also have a "now defunct" list of knives or companies no longer being made or around:

Spyderco Starmate
REKAT Sifu
Spyderco Wegner
REKAT Carnivour
Blackjack folding Mamba

A Sebenza should be on the current production list as it seems to be very highly touted and widely regarded as the standard for "fit and finish" in the modern one handed folder gendre.
But I just can't bring myself to lay out $300.00 on a folder. :(
However, if one has the means and desire, I would say check one of these pups out. Chris Reeve Knives gets the cutlery industry's nod of recognition with monotonous regularity for it's manufacturing standard.
