Pick one- USMC or BK2

The way I view it (owning both and from experience), the USMC is no slacker whatsoever. It does everything a knife should, and it can feasibly do somethings a knife shouldn't if only for a little. Never have I, nor should anyone ever, feel they have an inadequate blade when holding the USMC - the design is still around and has the history it does for a reason. It will be just fine in the woods and take everything you throw at it in stride. Sure, the BK2 is an undeniable tank, but - from my experience - the qualities that make it such a tank won't make it vastly superior to the USMC unless you are steadily going down the road to destruction.

Buy either one, and don't regret not getting the other.

I'd say you should plan on eventually owning both as either can function well in any setting. On the other hand, If you have to choose one, I would repeat what others have said and say you should get the BK2. Look at it this way and ask your self two questions: What are the chances I'll be in a knife fight? What are the chances I'll go camping?

Well buddy, it really depends on what you are gonna be using it for.

I'm a police officer, and I carry My Ka-Bar 1211 (7 inch fighting utility, except with kraton handle, same thing really) every day. I carry it concealed inside the waistband.

You tuck the full size in your waistband? Damn!!! Isn't that uncomfortable?

i usually go for the full tang option when i can

I finally got to handle a BK2 at a gun show last weekend. That sealed the deal. I ordered one yesterday. Man...what a serious hunk of steel. I'll still get the full size USMC, but I just had to give the first nod to the Becker.

Unless you are planning on using it as a tactical knife, I would recommend the BK-2 before the USMC. Even though I'm sure the USMC is a very competent knife, I think you'll find the BK-2 with its full tang more durable in the long run.

This is way out of date but the bk 2 would excel in a fight as there is only 2" difference in length. An forearm block against a kabar would cause a severe cut. A forearm block against a Bk 2 would cause a severed forearm.

but, when I'm in the woods, I carry my BK-2. One is a Combat knife, one is an outdoor knife.

Bloody hell sometimes you Americans annoy me. You have history with Frontiersman, Trappers etc, they generally carried 1 knife that did everything and without all the fancy blade steels we have know and tamed you country and now we must have 5 knives to do the job that was done by one. Oh well it keeps the knife makers rich. I'm no better, I have at least 100 Knives.

USMC is an amazingly cool knife caked with history but...

It's ridiculously versatile

Beckerhead #42

Love this knife, cut down a tree or make a spoon or a tooth pick. Not a problem.

Bloody hell sometimes people who insult people then say they're the same type of person annoy me.

I would go with the 1217 without hesitation. Classic design. All around good, functional blade that just feels great in the hand.

My next purchase will be a Becker but the attraction of the BK2 is lost on me. Sure, it will baton through a Cadillac and pry open bank vault doors, but those are things I don't do with a knife. I spend a lot of time camping and backpacking and I don't see the value added.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
I decided to just get both......(about 3 1/2 years ago....):D

Geez Jonny...you're so annoying to the rest of the world...
You should only have bought one...

I'm sure Frontiersmen had a slew of choices in Knife styles from hundreds of manufacturers while conquering the wild frontiers of America and only chose to go with one single Blade to carry...

I was never taught about the number of blades they carry...
That must be something that only experts on Frontiersmen and trappers of early America know...

Thanks for sharing...

BK7!! But, if you must, BK2. It may be heavy but its grind is superior for almost all tasks. It's a better slicer, chopper, splitter, and kitchen knife.
