Picked up Becker bk7. Disappointed by it.

There are a lot of "fake" Beckers out there. I wouldn't trust any knife I bought from an Army/Navy store. They usually sell cheap knive for the mall ninja's, at the cheapest price they can buy them for.

I think it's likely a real Becker. There is a lesson here about the value of hand picking though. If you can hand pick, then by all means take advantage.

Small imperfections can be disappointing out of the box but I have never heard of anyone having a failure of any of the Becker knives. Although I favor ESEE knives, Becker knives are hard use, dependable, and can be had at a great price point.

there's a difference between a return and an exchange for a defective item. if you go in and argue they are selling defective merch, esp if there is a crowd and you use a loud voice ;) point out as well you've spent $/$$$ there easily... and as well, they are charging QUITE a lot more than online, but if they don't appreciate you supporting them, you can just vote with your $$$$ and feet :)

regardless, you're going to get taken care of. as pointed out above, you're in good hands.
The shop only had the one bk7. They have two BK2s and they are the same price, so potentially I could trade it in for a 2. I needed the knife for chopping/shelter building. I chose the 7 because of the fact that it could be used for said shelter building, and as a combat knife if shtf. What I'd REALLY LOVE is a BK9 in place of the 7. Then I'd have to also buy a BK2.

Well said. Thank you for the input.

Ka-Bar has probably the best customer service of any business. Not just a knife company. I had a grind issue with one of my BK9s and sent it in. Within a week I had a replacement with a better grind. That was one out of 20 other ones I have. Its bound to happen. But the fact that the company is willing to go above and beyond thats a rare thing

As promised, pictures:
I took these using my smart phone, as it is the only camera I have available to me. As such, the images aren't of the highest quality. The irregularities seem more pronounced to me in real life than what I could capture with my phone.

Outside of the handle on tang.

Inside of handle (this one is especially hard to see. The tang breaks its line from the handle with a small indentation, causing the steel to protrude.):

I am going to keep the knife because I know that the irregularities are very minor and will not affect the performance of the blade. I'll take it somewhere to get sharpened and I'm sure after that I will soon be a BeckerHead (at least at heart.)

Once again, awesome designs Ethan! If only I could've gotten my hands on a BK9! I enjoy your book also. My mother had it ever since I can remember.

Well, one of the things that I like buying from a store,if the knives are'nt in that horrible plastic clam shell,is that I can inspect several different knives of the same make and pick out the best one.If I'm going to pay the higher store price,I am at least going to choose the nicest blade. That's common sense.:)

static, every company I've bought from has a problem here or there... even ESEE:eek: that's right...

I bought a rat izula when they first came out couple years ago and it was DULL adn I mean dull, I own and have owned several since and everyone has come sharp except one..

humans are sharpening these things.. they are imperfect to say the least.. :)

For starters, get yourself a Gatco deluxe diamond sharpening kit w/ceramic finishing stone. 25 degree angle is the ticket for me. You can't mess it up. There is immense satisfaction of being able to put a razors edge on your knives. Pretty soon, the angle will be a natural part of your hand movement, then you can get a diamond stick, steel stick & ceramic stick. Beckers are outstanding knives. They get the job done with authority at an AWESOME price point.

So I went to the army navy store and they swapped it no questions asked. The blade they swapped it with is sharp as can be and has beautiful fit and finish. I am so excited to use this knife this weekend.

To anyone looking to buy a Becker knife, DO NOT let this thread deter you. I wish I could change the title of the thread to something less negative.

The fact that my concerns were addressed in less than an hour by the man who designed the knife was enough to make me a believer. I see many BK&T knives in my future. With that kind if service, how could you not admire the man/company?

Ill have to post a follow up thread to this one to give my respect to the knife. Hopefully one day I will be a certified beckerhead. Until then, thank you all for your help and guidance.

You can go in and change the title, since you started it, you can edit it.

But I'm asking you not to. Threads with titles like this are going to draw more attention than others, and I would prefer to see people read this thread or at least have a chance to. When you google something about BKT knives, our forum is in the top 3 listed. I want folks to read this.

Thanks.

Glad you got it swapped and are happy now.

You can edit the title if you want to. Just go to the first post while logged-in and select "Edit Post." The title will be available available from that post only. ain't no thang though. Yours wasn't the first of its kind and won't be the last.

good for you and them, they deserve good feed back for sure..

the 7 was my first Becker also, I used to think they were so fugly and I'd never own one... well, I own a few and they're all great . I'm satisfied with everyone, I love the feel of the handle more then the esee 5 and the blade shape too..

please post a follow up review after you've given it some time..

I have a Camillus, had it since, oh, about the time it came out. This is my favorite chopper, only my Cold Steel Kukri machete outchops it. The finish has been wearing off the sweet spot for a long time and I've had to sharpen out some dings caused by user error. The original handles were comfortable, I made a set of black micarta handles, bought the factory micarta handles (on my Campanion now). Not thrilled with the sheath but it does what I need it to do. I think you got one that sneaked past QC.

Saw the pics and I suppose it may irk a guy to find a brand spankin out of the box, dinged up a bit. But considering that many of my knives look like hell warmed over after use, they seem pretty minor to me. To each their own I guess. As for hand picking. Years ago I was in Walmart many years ago and picked up a 110. I got the girl to take all the 110's in box out of the glass display and I opened, worked, and visually inspected each one, of maybe 15 or so there. Her eyes were rolling and she was getting snippy. But too damn bad for her, it's her job. Yes there were differences and I found a nicely grained, perfectly fitted 110 with a noticeably louder\stronger snapping lock up. My Becker's including a Camillus have all been fine tough working blades. The grind was off a bit on my Eskabar but it was minor and not deemed worthy of complaining about. Use the knife buddy, it will get more dings\memories of your adventures.

Not a problem! I hope people interested in the Kabar produced Becker BK7 will read to the end of this thread and see that I am extremely happy with my BK7 purchase.

In fact, the BK7 I got after exchanging came sharper than any of my other knives. (i still have yet to purchase a blade that will shave my arm hair.) The fit and finish (after handle adjustments) is on par with my ESEE-6.

I went out into the backyard last night and chopped up some dead wood with my 7 and was very pleased with the balance and chopping abilities. More to come in future threads.

Hey Essestatic.......

I am pleased that you are pleased............Perfection IS a goal and the people at Ka-Bar are, like the rest of us, still working on it.........IMHO customer service is realizing when you have missed the mark and doing something positive about it........

I realized back in the seventies when I was making climbing equipment that I hung on, on the weekends, that in a perfect world you would Magnaflux, X-ray and static test each piton, biner and hammer. but, each of those tests cost more than the RETAIL of the item.......I came up with a little riff on the subject..

60% of perfection costs very little more than 20%

80% is till relatively cheap

90% starts to hurt

95% is real expensive

99% only the US govt can afford it (think NASA)

100% look toward heaven.....

Anyhow please have a great big bunch of fun and please share it here........

Welcome to the neighborhood !!!!!!

All Best......
